Any experience with quality issues on newer EBMM Axis?

Ive been shopping around for a guitar lately and an EBMM Axis is on the top of my list, but I've been reading some mixed reviews on the newer Axis guitars (Post 2011) Mainly in regards to the quality of the newer music man branded floyds that they've been putting on the Axis guitars. Anyone have experience or own a newer Axis guitar and can shed some light?

I also heard about a substantial number of necks where the frets stick out a bit, aka the wood has shrunk a bit.

For some fun, try to bring that up on *their* forum. :wall::censored::bad:

I am selling off my Music Man stuff partially because of their behavior on there. I don't need that sort of thing.

Did they ever start labeling their new strings correctly and sorted out the Amazon listings? The pointer that they are messed up (wrong items under description) got me an official warning over there. Idiots. And they are surprised they are going downhill...

Is that music man's fault or amazon's?

Now I remember. Try searching for the Cobalt Flat strings. Anywhere. Talk about making your products hard to track down.

Anyway, made my point. Now let's post some pictures of pretty Music Mans.

A local shop has a brand new axis, but the neck alignment was slightly off and made the low E string closer to the edge of the board than the high E string.....so I didn't buy it. The neck carve was probably hands down the best neck I've ever felt/played on

Re: Any experience with quality issues on newer EBMM Axis?

To answer the original query.

There is no way I would put up with a sub-standard floyd. That's really just a good way to lower your enjoyment of a premium guitar. Possibly at the expense of out-of-tune gigs, for no good reason. I have a spare German Floyd from a Kramer Focus.

Having said that, I do not know either way whether quality did indeed go down in 2011. That would be fine if you could just ask EBMM about it, but as we both know we can't.

You aren't in MA, are you? We could drag mine to the shop and compare.

Well in 2011 they switched from the gotoh made floyd to an in house made one (most likely for cost reasons), a top mounted locking nut instead of a through neck one and a few other small changes. But no, I'm not in MA unfortunately. Ill either keep an eye out for a nice used pre 2011 one

Re: Any experience with quality issues on newer EBMM Axis?

Dont know about the issues, as Ive not shopped for them. But hearing about how they react on the forum and such, would prevent me from buying. Even tho I have always wanted a purple one like the one pictured above. However... That black one may win me over... SWEEET!! And the first picture is some gorgeous figuring!!!

Re: Any experience with quality issues on newer EBMM Axis?

Well according to the EBMM web site, the maple top is now a veneer. On my EBMM Axis that I bought new in June 2001 (its born on date was March 2001), it is a solid 1/8 piece of quilt maple, and extremely quilted 5A maple at that. The birdseye maple neck is extremely figured as well.

The Gotoh Floyd on mine is excellent, better than an OFR. It doesn't look like they're still using the same Gotoh since the posts are now chrome and not black, but only way to tell is is the brass tremolo block is stamped Gotoh. I can tell you that aside from the posts it looks like the same trem.

As far as fret ends sticking out, that's the price of an oiled neck that gets dry- same happened with fine. Get a humidification system to put in your guitar case that gets used on acoustic guitars and you should be fine.

I'd pick one out in person though, back when I got mine at Royal Music in Merrick NY (now closed), I cherry picked from about 15 they had on the shelf and picked the best.

The oiled neck is a bit prone to warping, after 10 years I developed a fret buzz on the G string 1st fret- I was told the neck "fishtailed" and needed a refret. Do I refretted with much larger Jescar super jumbo frets, shimmed the trem and neck and it's a superior guitar now.

That would have taken about 2mins to fix. There bolts right?

The issues with the unfinished neck is why I'm leaning towards the EVH wolf. Graphite rods in the neck for stability.

Re: Any experience with quality issues on newer EBMM Axis?

I played a EBMM Luke III at guitar center today. LOVED the neck. Roasted maple with birdseye's mmmm

Also played the new EBMM majesty guitar. Hated it. The neck was super flat and very wide compared to the Luke. Loved the new illuminator pickups though
