Any experiences with lil' pearly gates?

hey all,

Firstly thanks to the forum, I decided to go for APS2s for the neck and middle of my strat, and am worshipping the tone...i strung it with 11s and it sounds gorgeous. I put an SSL-5 in the bridge, still getting used to that one a bit, but am generally happy. might adjust the height later, see if there's a better sweet spot (oh it's upside down too, experimenting with the whole Jimi/Woodstock thing [fancy way of saying I forgot to check when I was soldering it in] but maybe i should put it the right way up)

Ok secondly, as the title implies, was wondering if anyone's bought a lil' pearly gates off the custom shop? I see its alnico II and someone said it balances well with APS2s. Any thoughts? Just general observations really, but is it much like the full pearly gates, as in texas rock / blues rock style? SRV/ZZTop/Black Crowes even maybe?

Cheers,

Kyle

It's missing some of the sizzle of the fullsize in my LP, but that's probably because the Lil PG is wired to 250k pots vs the 500k's in my LP.

It'll do ZZ Top and Black Crows easily, but it won't do SRV with any authenticity.

BTW, I'm the guy that has it paired with the APS-2's. I'm very happy with it.

Sounds interesting..I think at the moment if I had the choice between SRV and ZZTop/Black crowes it would be the later...think SRV is very difficult to achieve because he really got his sound down to a fine art by changing everything, wheras a more general texas blues/rock sound will give me more opportunity to develop my own tone. Maybe a lil pearly gates would be a good project for next time round..

Also consider that SRVs sound was regular Strat single coils, usually the neck pickup through a dimed Fender amp with a Tubescreamer. Theres probably a lot more, but I don't know much about SRV's sound, and thats all I do know.

Yeah and his heavy strings, plus he put a few resistor mods in his amps to give him a nicer clean sound. So yeh, like i say, not really looking to totally emulate SRVs sound, would rather work on my own tone, but I do like a hot texas type of tone for all that, and I just thought the lil' pearly gates sounded like a cool idea anyway :bigthumb:

so if anyone wants to offload one, give me a shout!
