Any fans of Gibson 57 Classic humbuckers?

Just picked up a 1 humbucker Fender Strat that was upgraded with this pup and i`m very impressed with it. Great punch,definition/clarity imo and was wondering if anyone uses or likes these.

Re: Any fans of Gibson 57 Classic humbuckers?

I like them a lot; they have a unique texture that some like, some don't. They can be a little woofy in the neck, and thin in the bridge, but I'd take them over many other PAF- types I've tried.

BTW, the 57 Classic Plus is an excellent pup, often even better in the bridge than the standard 57.

Re: Any fans of Gibson 57 Classic humbuckers?

Lots of people say they are the best pickup in the Gibson lineup. I see them as an upgrade to the 490s and about equivalent to the Burstbuckers.

I do like them a lot and think they have more singing quality about them. They are a touch bright but not in a bad way (in the bridge). They can get nice vintage tones and you can also push them through a Dual Rectifier and get really cool modern tones.

I think they are great

Yeah i`m not sure if i have the Classic or Classic Plus come to think of it. Is there any way to tell? I think they are all marked on the bottom of the pup with the words "patened applied for" but i could be wrong.

Re: Any fans of Gibson 57 Classic humbuckers?

I always wanted to try one in a Floyd strat guitar, I thought they were great in a '61 SG Reissue.

You can tell them apart by measuring the DC resistance; the 57 is 8k, the 57+ is 9k, plus or minus the usual variances.

I find a 8K HB with an A2 to be too dark in the neck of my mahogany & semi-hollow guitars, so I put in an A5 and get the treble and clarity I want. I like Duncan's A2 PAF's better, as they aren't as prone to being muddy.

In the bridge '57 the high end is a little odd sounding to me, but a roughcast A2 took care of that.

Re: Any fans of Gibson 57 Classic humbuckers?

The '57 is a really nice Gibson PAF. It has equally wound coils and is potted so it is a bit "smoother" than the Burstbuckers.

Mine is in the neck of a LP and I really like it. It is my second choice in that aplication, my first choice being the Pearly Gates, but it sounds very close to the PG and good enough that I have no intentions of ever changing it.

I haven't tried it in the bridge, but in your guitar I would expect it to sound brighter with good clarity.

Congrats and enjoy.

Re: Any fans of Gibson 57 Classic humbuckers?

I just got an Explorer and had the seller put in a 57 plus and classic set. They were always at the top of the reccomendation list when I asked what to drop in the Explorer. So we will see when it shows up!

Re: Any fans of Gibson 57 Classic humbuckers?

I don't have to worry about it being too dark or muddy in the bridge position of an Alder body Maple neck Strat.
Great clarity and definition. I guess its not very common to put a Gibson humbucker in a Strat huh? Lol

Re: Any fans of Gibson 57 Classic humbuckers?

Actually, I've seen a number of people say Gibson buckers in a Fender sounds great; I think Jeremy has touted it many times. I'd try it, but haven't felt like routing the body to fit the long legs of a PAF.

Re: Any fans of Gibson 57 Classic humbuckers?

I like Gibson pickups in strats, mostly because the Gibsons have a bit more hair on them than the more refined Duncans. They add some character to the smooth strat sound.

As for Gibson pickup in Gibsons. If the guitar came with Burstbuckers or 57's, I'll probably just leave them in. I only change them if I really don't care for them.....so far that's mostly 498T/490R. Speaking of which, try a 498T in a super strat. It's a good sound. It's basically like a ruder Custom 5 with a tad more mids.

Have you swapped magnets in them? With the stock magnets they're certainly the odd pair: dark neck/bright bridge. Driven many players crazy. I put an A5 in the neck and it really opens up the sound. To me, the 498T is the Gibson version of a C5, so I put in either an A8 or UOA5 in my 498T's, and that fills in the mids and takes off some of the excess high end. Big improvement.

Re: Any fans of Gibson 57 Classic humbuckers?

I've got some 57's in one of my Les Pauls...great clarity, as has been mentioned...actually took me a little while to get used to.

As for putting a Gibson pickup in a Fender type guitar, I heard some guy named Eddie tried that once...not sure how it turned out, though. :naughty:

Re: Any fans of Gibson 57 Classic humbuckers?

I like the '57 clean a lot but dirty it sounds like your rolled the tone down to 5 while it is at 10.

Re: Any fans of Gibson 57 Classic humbuckers?

I have the '57 Classics in my ES-335 and my Custom Shop Les Paul Elegant. I also have them in the two GOTW Les Paul Classic Antiques, which are fitted with the '57 Classic/Classic Plus. I like how they work in the Classic Antiques and the 335, but I am less enamored with them in the Elegant.

My three LP Historics have the Burstbucker 1 & 2, and I really like these, too. They are just so versatile, moving easily through almost any genre.

I'm not a big fan of the 490R/498T combo as a set, though they aren't too bad individually.

I've got Seths, Anniversarty Seths, Antiquitys and a '59/JB set; and some Ibanez guitars with the Super '58s, and some with their Infinity 1&2 set. I think these are all good pickups, for my tin ear the differences are sometimes subtle. I can easily move between any of the guitars with any of the pickups I've mentioned and get great tone.

I`m not sure if thats what i`m getting but on distortion there IS something different/unique about the sound of these, but its a sound that i like very much!!

Re: Any fans of Gibson 57 Classic humbuckers?

Yep. The Burstbucker series pups (including the '57) are good, versatile pups. Work in many guitars and many situations.

Well 57 classics are lets say 8k, then a 57 classic plus might be 9k. It depends on the temperature so they will either be almost exactly the same, in which case they're both 57's or if one is 10% higher it's a PLUS model.

Oh hang on, you just own one of them. Even so it's still going to be ballpark 8k or 9k.
