Any Fender Mustang owners??

I've got this sudden itch to build a Warmoth mustang (with some odd specs for a 'stang) but i'm a bit concerned with the shorter scale of the neck. I'm very used to playing 25.5 scale strats and teles. am i going to kick myself for going to a shorter scale? i mean, will it feel like playing a tiny toy or is it not a huge change that i won't even notice after a few minutes of playing it? I tried to find a shop with a 'stang today to try it out, but no luck, not one store around me has any origional or reissues. one thing i know is that the strings feel a bit looser (i'm told) so that's no problem, i'll just string it up with some 11's which should feel similar to 10's on a strat. any info on this would be great. Thanks.

Re: Any Fender Mustang owners??

I freakin love mine... hard to deal with though. Don't get a mustang bridge with it either. Thats the worst part of the guitar. Although its tuff to make play well, it is definately my bes sounding guitar. Its a MIJ '95. Was a lefty, then I converted it. Thats probably why it sounds so good. The pickups are angled, so they are reversed now. I've heard this kind of thing contributed to hendrix's sound too. (not shure though)

Re: Any Fender Mustang owners??

If you are doing a Warmoth, make it a srting-through bridge. I don't like those top loader bridges.

Re: Any Fender Mustang owners??

thanks for the reply!

as for the bridge i plan on using warmoth's "modified mustang bridge" which has adjustable saddles, along with their compound radius neck and mustang tremlo setup...however i will never use the tremlo...i just want the classic mustang look. all that along with schaller locking tuners and a graphite nut. all those things considered i don't think i'll have tuning problems...will i?

Re: Any Fender Mustang owners??

I don't use trems and I'm not familiar with that one. If it is quality, you should be alright.

Re: Any Fender Mustang owners??

a child's guitar??? i never knew that, i just thought it was a different scale lol. oh and the funny part is i play metal and heavy punk...this should be funny seeing/hearing from a hot rodded mustang :laugh2:

as for trems i for the most part dont use the either, all my strats are locked down, when i need a trem i used my floyd equipped guitar(s)

I suggest a TOM personally... string through:)

they DON'T feel like toys. At least for me switching between my 25.5 scale guitars and the 24" mustang/jags has never been a problem. It gives you a better "stretch" across the fretboard, and I like that the strings are looser, more bendability.

btw, what pickups? color? pickguard?

Re: Any Fender Mustang owners??

I'm a former 'stang owner. I had one (vintage '68 or '69, the red one with the racing stripe) for about 10 years, and just sold it recently.

I think you'll definitely be better off with a Warmoth Mustang than a Fender, and here are a few reasons why: You want to use a different tremelo than the original. It gives none of the advantages, and all the disadvantages of having a trem bridge. The bridge rocks back and forth independently of the tailpiece, so any trem usage results in the guitar going out of tune. To adjust the height of the bridge, you have to take off all the strings and remove it from the guitar. You then adjust the posts by hand, using your best guess as to where you need to be, then reinstall it, and restring. If you guessed wrong, the strings have to come back off, and the process is repeated. The short scale is a horrible idea. It felt awkward, and not as easy to adjust to as going from 25.5 to 24.75. Light strings will be really floppy. However, heavier guage strings (11 or higher) will cause the tailpiece to pull forward enough that there's almost no dive in the trem bar. The only way to correct this is by completely removing the trem unit from the instrument, as there's no strat-like trem access on the back. The pickup switching system is ok for home usage, but unusable in performance. Each pickup has it's own on/off/out of phase switch, and none of the settings are good for rhythm & lead. Most of them sound very similar, as well. Mine had replacement tuners, so I'm gonna assume they didn't work very well, either.

It was the first guitar I ever owned, and I have yet to regret selling it.

Not exactly a glowing endorsment JB. :laugh2:

Re: Any Fender Mustang owners??

Maybe you can get one of their 24.75" necks, depending on the neck joint. Are they rounded like a Strat, or flat?

Re: Any Fender Mustang owners??

ok here is the rundown...i'm leaving colors out...thats to be decided but it will have comp. stripes!!!

alder body
warmoth modified mustang bridge
warmoth mustang tremlo setup (will NEVER use the bar, i just like the look)
hot rails in the bridge and neck
it will be drilled for a side input jack (reson below)
for controlls it will have 1 volume 1 tone and a LP style 3 way toggle in place of the volume knob (other knobs move down a hole on the control plate)
neck will be maple or flame maple with and ebony fingerboard (or rosewood...leaning towards ebony though)
standard thin size
med. jumbo fret wire
and warmoth compund radius
schaller locking tuners
graphite nut
2 modern string trees

that's the basics of my "hot rod 'stang" idea

any other input?

Re: Any Fender Mustang owners??

i asked about going to a longer scale (strat or other) and warmoth said it can't be done b/c pickups, bridge and whatnot would all be in the wrong place then...that's what they told me.

thanks for all your input everyone.

i'm still not sure on this idea but i gotta be honest i love the look of the mustang that's what gave me this idea....pure looks lol...but it MUST play well too or there is not point, hence why i ask you guys :)

I strongly suggest a Tunomatic. It won't rock like a traditional mustang bridge.

That makes sense, the bodies on those things are really small. Just thought I'd offer a suggestion.

Re: Any Fender Mustang owners??

Have you ever used a Floyd tremelo? Mustang trems are very similar, except without all the good stuff :)

If you break a string, the other 5 go out of tune. If you go to drop D, the other 5 go out. Bend one string, the others go flat.

I'm telling you, you'll be REALLY sorry you installed the POS. Use a T-O-M. Looks close enough, and it works :D

Re: Any Fender Mustang owners??

is there any way to lock down that mustang trem...i do own a welder hahaha...seriously has it been done any way? and it will still cause problems even without using a bar? this is killing my idea...but i'd rather know now before i spend the cash.
