Any Gibson 498T users?

Re: Any Gibson 498T users?

SG's do rock. I'm surprised that they're not more popular; they certainly sound fuller & warmer than a Strat. And full access to all the frets is nice when you're in the mood for solos.

After three years on hold, I've finally got done with my Epi G-400 Custom.

I've put on those dreaded P-94s and suddenly they started to rock big time! I still don't love the neck one, but the bridge by itself and both-on position now sound absolutely wonderful.

I realise now that those P-94s are NOT for just any guitar... oh well, live and learn!

I've always liked SGs too, but I'm a great big guy and they look ridiculous on me--might as well be a toy guitar! LOL! I'll stick with my LPs, 335s, and G&L Legacys, but wouldn't mind having a '61 Reissue or one of the Custom Shop hardtail '62s. I'd just never play it in public! On a little guy like Angus they look great--but on me--no way!!!

I'm 6'5" myself, and yes, SG's look a little small on me, but then so do LP's. You're right, 335's are the right size for us. Hides the belly too.

Re: Any Gibson 498T users?

I love the look of SGs and I always hate playing them. They're so flat and thin that they're unbalanced. I had an Epi for awhile and picked up a few in stroes and I'm never as satisfied as when I pick up an LP.

my gibson SG is even more unbalanced than normal since i've got full sized grovers on mine. so what i did was move the bottom button strap up so that the neck doesn't dive anymore:D

Re: Any Gibson 498T users?

I love having a hot bridge and dark neck pickup combo. I find middle pickups and combinations in general horrible sounding. Personally, I didn't like the 498T so much, but my god, I just love the 490R for bluesy solos. Just perfect for solos, not necessarily for Rhythm.

Re: Any Gibson 498T users?

The 398T is an underrated pickup. It is really thick, lots of mids and lows, highs are rather smoothed over however, so I recommend people try a 500k pot to open it up and then it really shines. I find it to be similar to a JB but a little warmer and thicker, a little more organic. Great definition and snarl. Perfect for rock or hard rock!
Really punishing, full, punchy, thick fat n juicy Gibson tones! :)

Wow, funny how attitudes change over time. I have never liked the 498T in a Les Paul, but in the past few years I've had it in mahogany slab bodied Juniors and loved it. This past weekend I changed the bridge 57 Classic of my SG Standard to a 498T. I kept the stock 57 Classic in the neck. I think this is the combination that will work.

Re: Any Gibson 498T users?

I'm very curious as to the specs on the 498T.

I know that it's around 13-14K, with an Alnico 5, which is what the Duncan Custom series is.

But what guage wire is the 498T? 43 or 44 AWG? 44 would make it an underwound JB, and 43 would make it right around a Custom 5, but surely, it doesn't sound like a Custom 5.

What other factors would make it stingy-er, grainier, etc?

per Gibson homepage: the 498T is 9.0 DC resistance.

Not to bring to your attention that you're responding to a eight-year-old thread, only to say that the "9" in the spec you cited is wrong, as some other specs on several other products on Gibson's site.

The 498T DC reading is about 14K, and it's wound with 2 x 7,000 turns of AWG #43 SPN wire.

HTH,

You certainly could find a Duncan neck HB that would have better articulation & tone than a '57 Classic.

HTH,

it's an old thread. I cited what I thought was a credible website.

Re: Any Gibson 498T users?

Have them in my 2003 SG Standard and I've never once thought of changing them. I think they are in this 2002 ES-135 I just picked up. I haven't had this guitar long enough to have an opinion though.
