Just curious guys ?

For the last few years, i am looking into guitars that is not a "let's follow the flok of sheep" trent like options.

I believe the Voodoo series w. black bodies and red'ish tinge in their grain can look very GOOD, if you replace those redn'black gimmicky pu's and the same colour co-ordinated knobs - yuk !

I've been looking at voodoo Pauls on the bay lately. Mostly going for over a grand?!?!?!?! I don't think they cost that much originally. I came pretty close to pulling the trigger on an Explorer. I dig them.

Re: Any Gibson Voodoo LP or SG owners here ?

they're kinda gimmicky in my opinion...and a big part of the Gibson tone is the mahogany body. but whatever they look better than the goth series.

To me the Voodoo series always came of as actually very trendy, because it was trying to be different, but in a very obvious way, if that makes sense.

Sort of like when a 16 year old kid dresses in nothing but black concert t's and grows their hair long to express their individualism just like hundreds of thousands of other kids like them who are at the same concert because they are into the same music LOL

The voodoo stuff wasn't different simply because it was doing its own thing, but because a design/marketing dept though it up.

Its different with the purpose of fitting into a certain category and even the name and marketing try to point that out.

Same with the Menace series stuff, its "hard" because they say it is and its got a brass knuckle inlay. Of course theres no rule that you've got to take a kick to the face before they say your cool enough to play it though, which if it was a really hardcore guitar, you'd have to be worthy of. Instead all it takes is having the money to pay for it. Not very hardcore at all when you think about is it ?

Thats what I like about that shell pink fender strat I posted about a while back. Its totally different because who plays a pink guitar ? No one I can think of, but it wasn't created to be crazy color to get attention, rather it was simply one of the rarest of the original fender color choices and during the last 50's, pink was rather popular for cars etc.

Re: Any Gibson Voodoo LP or SG owners here ?

it's really pretty obvious to break down...

In the late 90's as grunge was fading and everybody was listening to Blink-182 and Green Day, Gibson brings us the SG-X:
SG-bBLU.jpg

cuz you only need one humbucker for punk, and it comes in all those sweet surf colors!

then in the early 00's Korn, Slipknot and Kittie start getting more attention and Nine Inch Nails is on tour so they drop the Goth series on us:
sggothic.jpg

The satin finish and single crescent moon inlay reflect the dark depths of your angst-ridden soul.

Those kinds of goths quickly got absorbed by the Good Charlotte pop-punk mall goths so what does Gibson give us? PINK SKULLS!

and now that everybody swooshes their hair over one eye, wears their girlfriends' pants and makeup, tattoos X's on their hands and start bands with names longer than some songs i've written, we are graced with the SG Menace.

i guess there's really nothing wrong with always trying to have a guitar that matches the latest aesthetic trends. most guitar companies do it by giving a popular guitarist a signature axe...Gibson just does what they do with different inlays or finishes.

In most of these cases I think it's a case of 'one stroke too many'...i mean if you can't look like you rock holding a basic SG Standard or even a SG Jr. with just a P90 in it you need to stop trying to rock at all hahaha

Re: Any Gibson Voodoo LP or SG owners here ?

The voodoo's are Futt Bugly, but at least they're a bit different.
The SG and the LP have ash bodies, instead of mahogany.
Never played one, but always wanted to.

NEVER :boggled:

You can still get them brand new (old unsold stock) in various US stores for for $850. 00 (SG) & $980.00 (LP).

They guys on eVillebay are taking phatt bloody chances !

I agree 100% about the Goth's - i honestly do not want one even it it is "just" $300.00 !
I WILL take another MM over the LP Goths - just not nice !

I got this idea of getting either an SG 0r LP, and replacing those butt-ugly redN'black PU's with opencoil black units - probably SD's :D
And aslo replace those redN'black knobs w. black tophats.
You can even try to stain the silly skull away !

With those "modz', i am sure it will be a bloody GREAT back-up guitar !!!

Re: Any Gibson Voodoo LP or SG owners here ?

I know that the trend thing is interesting to look at, and is very true. I really enjoyed empty pocket's post, lol, made me laugh caus it reflects a certain reality.

Bottom line : I played some, and didn't like them, independantly of the looks. They just don't do it for me. For the same price, studio faded mahogany models will kick twice as much butt, and look a lot better after a few cosmetic changes, for not much more money. Sure they look boring with the black on them, but for about 50$, they can shine. Observe :

Save your money when it comes to do the voodoo series. Other gibson models will play, sound and look better.

PS. This one cost me 900$ with the upgrades, and with a little store bargain time.

WOULD HAVE LOVED TO SEE AN SG BFG

I'm not sure it would look anything like the bfg, because the look of it comes from the unsanded arched top. Since the sg has a flat top, they would have to carve away at the top, wich would be weird in my opinion.

I would be down for a sg with a soapbar and a bucker tho...

Very Nice Collection you have there ! Two thumbs Up to you mate !

I wanted to get a Les Paul Vintage Mahogany (used), but that idea went out of the window when i bought an unwanted SG Faded project guitar (pu-less and all the other parts in a box) for $350.00 a week ago !

Come to think of it, i would still love to have a VM LP !
But then again, a modded (see post #8) Voodoo would be killer too.

Then carve away on this ugly thing !

The BFG-treatment WILL make it look better :D

Re: Any Gibson Voodoo LP or SG owners here ?

I do believe that Millsart & Empty Pockets got oit right when they say it is all about marketing, and trying to keep up with the trends !

The only problem is, that Co's like Gibson is always too late !
Their R&D teams take way to long to wake up and see what is a trend, and by the time they relay the info to the work-shop/factory, that trent is almost burnt out !

Looking at Empty Pockets' images, i have to agree with his train-of-thought, but it is also a pitty that the Gibbo R&D dep. did nto give us anything (SG-wise) for the GRUNGE era !
Especially with the HUGE impact Kim Thayil of Soundgarden had, with his SG-shaped Guild !
Wonder if they ever had any ideas of unleashing a GRUNGE axe on us ???
Instead they ran wiht the POP-punk of the above mention , ermmm, (don't even want to call 'em bands)

I miss those GRUNGE days ! Will it ever come back ?...and if it does, will it give us another, just as good, SoundGarden ?

Re: Any Gibson Voodoo LP or SG owners here ?

!!!!!!!!

Dude, I saw one of those at the local music store, and they are hot!

I wouldn't be opposed to making one with a carved top and leaving it unfinished though....

They look as if they can be just as heavy as a Les Paul !!!

Re: Any Gibson Voodoo LP or SG owners here ?

The red resin rub look of the Voodoo and the red/black pups is what attracted me to the Voodoo series. And I almost bought a V. But the Skull killed it for me. I'd buy one if it was a good deal.

And the BFG is next on my list of GAS. To me that guitar is spot on aside from adding covers, real knobs and a little rewire job. But who really wants to buy a guitar and keep it stock on this forum?

And as for Gibson's marketing ..............:kabong: 'tis the way of the world unfortunatly.

Re: Any Gibson Voodoo LP or SG owners here ?

Get rid of the silly skull and maybe the pickups and knobs and there might be something. The ridiculous prices don't help either.

Or maybe just get a swamp ash guitar and finish it that way.
