Any Good Kit Guitars?

What's the reasoning behind wanting a kit guitar when for $100 more you can buy a "beginner" guitar?

Kit parts give you pretty much the same thing but with "some assembly required".

Cut out the middleman. It just makes sense.

I haven't tried any kits but have been interested in the idea for a while. The reason for a kit is if you want to do something custom/unique with the finish and/or want to rout it in some custom way.

You've got more flexibility in what you can do with kit guitars, and if I were to buy a beginner guitar I'd have to put in the extra work to "fix" all the decisions they made that I didn't like anyway.

I dont understand the question... are you saying that making something yourself, making your own choices that you prefer instead of choosing between the fixed choices of others, and customizing anywhere you want isnt a worthwhile pursuit?

Isnt that the entire point of Symor Ducan's and the forum itself's existence?

Building a kit is a good thing if you haven't made a guitar before. It gives you some first-hand experience and is a great learning opportunity.

Yes, you can make the argument for buying a cheap prebuilt guitar and modding it if necessary (there are so many cheap guitars that are actually pretty good). But the experience you get from making one yourself is invaluable.

I say, go for it. Good luck. I'm not so sure there is a lot of differences in the kits that are available from different sources. Find one that fits your budget and just do it.

If you're buying a kit, try to find one with at least the bridge mounting holes pre-drilled. It takes a lot of guesswork out of trying to align the neck.

It's also worth trying to find a pre-painted one or one you can finish with a low tech finish like tung oil or wipe-on poly. Home painting is a PITA.

Finally, unless it's an expensive kit, figure on throwing virtually all the hardware and electronics, including the pickups, straight in the trash can.

You're right. You don't.

Stewmac is a good option, especially since they will give you support along the way. I would also recommend buying a body, neck, and hardware kit from guitarfetish.com but they don't have a Mustang. I've used their bodies and necks and they are good quality, especially for the $.

My only advice would be, don't spend more than you can afford to lose on your first try. Painting at home is a major pain, and painting takes a lot of patience, I would recommend wipe on type stains/finishes. It is possible to get a good finish with the proper paints and patience, but you will also need a decent space to do it, good paints are generally quite nasty to work with.

Fender style kits are a good option because the bolt on necks can be adjusted to get proper body / bridge / neck alignment. Glue-in necks, OTOH, only give you one shot at getting it right.

Cut your own body and finish it. Source quality hardware & electronics online. Get your neck from Mighty Mite, Warmoth or Stew Mac.

If you don't want to build your body there are dozens of companies out there sell cheap bodies online, both finished and not.

What he said, but only if you're building a Fender copy. Mixing and matching for set necks can be problematic.
