Any good solid-state amp recommendations? Current offerings or out of production?

Re: Any good solid-state amp recommendations? Current offerings or out of production?

I think he said he wanted models and built in effects in Post #1

That's why I glazed over the Bandit and Laney SS offerings

Good point, so he wants a modeling amp, the Boss Katanas get good reviews but I haven't tried one personally.

I have a Cube
And VIP2
Played the Vox modeler and the mustang

I like Peaveys models
The Vyper amps were nice too
Models were good
Kinda flimsy feeling though

DON'T LAUGH! Why not something really inexpensive and reacts like a 50 watt tube amp? Tiny footprint, weighs about 1 pound, takes pedals well and uses the NuTube technology which sounds incredible. Vox MV50 Clean (or choose your model) sounds like a blackface clean amp. It is small enough to mount on your pedalboard which is what I am considering with my pedalboard build. You can use this amp direct and it doesn't generate any heat. I am enjoying mine.

He mentioned that he wants built in effects and preferably modeling.

Vox VTxx+ series? I have the older VT15+, and it has models and FX.

Re: Any good solid-state amp recommendations? Current offerings or out of production?

It's not modeling, but the Acoustic brand G120 DSP amp - available in head or combo format - is very good sounding 2 channel, solid-state amp with digital effects. I own the head version and run it through a Marshall 1960A 4x12 cabinet. It replaced my Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue and that wouldnt have happened if the clean channel wasn't up to snuff. Obviously the cleans are not as good as the BDRI, but suprisingly pleasing with an EQ pedal placed in the effects loop... but the Acoustic's solid state power section was much better for handling high gain pedals i feed into it. The built-in distortion channel on the Acoustic is pretty good too, if i had to use it as a backup to my preferred pedals into the power amp.

Noted the OP wants effects and models. Not sure why models are needed in a "grab & go" but...

As said - the Peavey can cover any sound because wide range controls, and two modes on two channels. Fender = Normal + Bright + Reverb. Metallica Black Album = Lead + Thrash + nothing. And then just get a small multi - fx for the loop for wayyyyy better fx.

But models/FX then I say Cube

Re: Any good solid-state amp recommendations? Current offerings or out of production?

Thanks for the input guys. I've decided to go with a Roland Cube 60. I actually used to own one and remember liking it well enough but ended up selling it because I didn't see any need for it at the time and wanted money.

Cube 60 it is. I wanted a variety of onboard options because I don't want to be forced to carry extra gear for sounds. If I have built in reverb and chorus I don't have to haul around chorus and reverb pedals and a daisychain power supply, etc (I don't actually have a pedalboard so I'd have to breakdown and setup everytime). For distortions I wanted options so I wasn't stuck with one sound that I may not necessarily care for.

As a former Cube 60 owner, I fully approve!

And if you ever feel like upgrading it, buy a nice 1x12 cabinet with a good speaker. It sounds GREAT with an extension cabinet.

I've actually been considering a 1x12 speaker cab or trying to upgrade the Cubes speaker itself at some point. I've read the Cubes stock speaker isn't as deep as other speakers and that the back panel would need to be dremeled out to accommodate a replacement speaker though. I'd like to pair the Cube with a Vintage 30.

I had with a 1x12 loaded with an Eminence Wizard as an extension cabinet and it's sooo much better. Somebody on this forum years ago not only replaced the stock speaker but also backported his Cube 60 and swore by the results. I'd suggest you search for that thread, it was very interesting.

I thought a small hole saw would port it nicely

At work we have these plastic rings from the ends of the roll of material
They throw them away
The are about 4 inches in diameter

Re: Any good solid-state amp recommendations? Current offerings or out of production?

Unfortunately, I got burned with the Cube 60 purchase. I came across a volume dropout issue after I bought it from a guy on Offerup, notified him (to which he talked to me earlier on), and eventually ignored me once I told him it was indeed the amp that was the problem. Anyway I did some troubleshooting thinking it could potentially be the pickup in my guitar or a bad cable but it is indeed the amp. I'm thinking of selling the amp for parts and moving on but not sure what other amps will work for me. I really liked the Rfier setting on the Cube and am most used to Mesa Rectifer distortion.

Volume drops when cranked up?

Re: Any good solid-state amp recommendations? Current offerings or out of production?

No.... It's when it's at extremely low volume (live in apartment building so I cant crank amps).

Probably a dirty volume pot. Try playing with a bit more volume and if it helps with the prpblem it's most likely that.

Re: Any good solid-state amp recommendations? Current offerings or out of production?

Thanks. At this point I've decided to take the Cube 60 to a tech and have them sort out the issue. I'm in the process of contacting a local tech to see what he charges to diagnose an amp and will be going from there. I'm hoping for the best and that there's nothing major wrong with the Cube 60 unit I have so that I can make it work. I really don't have any other amps in mind to replace it with nor do I want to track down another.

The Cube has independant volumes for the clean and dirty channels. Does it happen on both? Could be a bum volume potentiometer.

I actually haven't spent that much time on the clean channel. Having said that, I'll have to get back you on that.
