I used to rock a an old Epi Cherryburst in my old band with my old Norlin LP Studio in my old metal band, Think Soilent Green meets Isis, I always got compliments on the Epi's finish, I miss it way more than the Norlin, It played much better...when I sold it like an idiot I had blackouts in it, when I was gigging with it I had a Distortion set in it.....sounded pretty gnarly with my rig at the time....

It would seem to me that most metal players using a Paul prefer the Custom. It is BLACK....

You can get a Custom, Standard, Studio, and other varieties in black. But for some reason, the Custom has a more metal look, especially in solid colors.

I play everything with my burst LP. Slipknot, Bullet for My Valentine, Amon Amarth, BLS, etc. I know that's not the answer your looking for since I'm not famous, but just because it's a burst doesn't mean I use it for old guy rock ;)

Why do you ask?

for the record Brent Hinds and Bill Kelliher do, as does Matt Pike. Countless stoner bands definitely do.

Didn't Vivian Campbell use a LP std on the early Dio work, one that he painted black himself?

lThe problem with this , and all "Metal" threads, are what we agree to define as "Metal'. I learned that a long time ago. Youll never win, some idiot will teenage come here and claim a stock Tele will play Metal. My own opinion is that modern Metal with tight super high gain amps is not really for a Burst., although some idiot will always use it for that, including the peckerheads Ray****to mentioned.
Your Les Pausl are classic, very depp sounding and sweet sounding intrumenst, and they have smaller frets and are also not really flat radii, so more suited foir classic rocl and calsic "heavy " metal, not contemporary modern stuff . Why is drone/ doom even mentioned as modern Metal? Thats either stoner, and retro, or downtuned doom- sure, any humbucker guitar could work for that.
I don't own a Burst, but it'd be the last thing I'd grab for Modern metal. I'd sooner grab my Jackson thats worth probably 1/100,000,000th what the old burst is.

Why wouldn't they play a burst for metal?

If you can't get a guitar to do what you want, it ain't the guitar that's the problem...

Re: any heavy metal guitarists playing LP bursts?

I would say John Sykes but I doubt he falls into the category and the only color LP I've ever seen him play is black as well.

Re: any heavy metal guitarists playing LP bursts?

Nothing wrong with playing a '59 burst, as long as it feels right. I'd swap the pickups for a more modern, aggressive sound, but the rest of the guitar is fair game for any genre.

You don't really need a floyd rose, a super flat radius, and 24, 27 or 36 super ultra mountain-sized jumbo frets to play metal.

I prefer a hardtail, 12" radius, and 22 medium frets. Sounds an awful lot like a vintage-Gibson.
