Hardtail, all original.... Just want an idea of real market value now. Finish is original but rough. Has original case and bridge cover.

that don't LOOK rough in that picture.....looks pretty darned good.....JIMO

Re: Any Idea of Value? 1978 Strat

well there's a 1980 Strat in good condition on Ebay going for $800. IMO- if your guitar was hanging at Guitar Center, they'd call it "Vintage" and charge $2400 for it.

And you could go back in 6 months and it would still be there like everything else in GC's overpriced "vintage" room LOL

Buying or selling?

If you are buying, I say (based on what I see selling) $1500-$2000 average depending on how it sounds.

If you are selling, then that thing is $500 tops...

Where shall I paypal? :D

Re: Any Idea of Value? 1978 Strat

there has been a lefty one just like that on ebay forever at $3000

Re: Any Idea of Value? 1978 Strat

I see these things from 1300-1800.

Is it very heavy? That plays a big role. Many players shy away from those Fenders because they are boat anchors. If you have a light one people can get really gaga about it.

Technically, for a hardtail it's probably better to be very heavy ash but that's not how people think.

Re: Any Idea of Value? 1978 Strat

I was thinking of doing a trade for my 1969 Sg Jr and wondering if the values match up.... thanks for the help!

Wow... I still remember seeing these guitar regularly going for $400- $450 20 years ago. The guy who ran the store didn't like to see them coming in because they would hang on the wall for the longest time. And every one except one that I played were heavy as lead. Now they're considered vintage (at least by a few), granted they are on the low end of the scale, but still.

If I were you, I'd list your 69 SG for whatever the Ebay going price is these days. Then, take the money and shop for a really nice newer Fender, like a 57 or 62 Hot Rod Stratocaster.

Re: Any Idea of Value? 1978 Strat

Just found out 2 pickups were changed and a pot. Has the original case. I think all the rest is original...

That drives down the value of the guitar in your favor if you're still looking to work out a deal.

Have you actually played the guitar and been able to check it out in person? As with any used guitar (vintage or not), you'd be wise to assess the physical condition of the guitar including the neck, frets, etc. before making a deal. I'd want to know if the neck is in good shape and if the neck pocket is tight, especially on a late '70's strat.

You might try googling something like "1978 strat" and seeing what you get for hits. Also, the websites for Vintage Guitar magazine and gbase might help you get a little more of a handle on the market value, too.
