Any Info??? 1990-1991 Fender Custom Shop Stratocaster Blackburst Floyd

Re: Any Info??? 1990-1991 Fender Custom Shop Stratocaster Blackburst Floyd

I think the guitar looks slightly better with the rosewood fretboard, actually. I dig the maple too but I like matching body/headstock colors more with rosewood fretboards.

Re: Any Info??? 1990-1991 Fender Custom Shop Stratocaster Blackburst Floyd

I'm digging through GOOGLE and finding very little info...do know that the Fender Color is "Black Pearl Dust" and everything keeps referring to the Fender Strat Plus and Ultra Models of the period of 1989-90 and beyond w/Strat Ultras being offered w/a Floyd II around '92-'93, which I think is a mis-naming of the Fender/Floyd joint design standard strat bridge that Fender used around that time, but everything states the Plus & Ultra being "just below a Custom Shop Guitar".

Kept running into the same reference in most of the really informational and detailed findings so I sent an e-mail to the guy responsible for the site, as he appears to be an expert/guru regarding the Strat Plus and Ultras of the time period. Hopefully he will be kind enough to respond and possibly can shed a little light on the guitar for me.

That looks superb! Never seen one like that before, absolutely killer... congrats. If I may ask, how much did you get that for? Hopefully it's a keeper for you and it doesn't matter but I'm curious.

Per Mike Eldred, Fender Custom Shop Marketing Director...

Mike Eldred - Fender said:
This was probably a GC run that we did. These would be done from time to time, and there were probably about 25 to 50 done.

So I called the Fender Customer Relations Rep, very nice guy btw, who attempted to look up the Serial Number...nothing....discussed the guitar and he told me immediately..."I know exactly what it is....an AWESOME Custom Shop Strat"!!! :lol Sorry...had to share as he cracked me up.

*** This thing is UNREAL!!! I am blown away by how sweet it is overall. No regrets on giving up the Ibanez to get it that's for damn sure.

I just got it back from the shop this evening and...WOW...this has the BIGGEST SET OF BALLS EVER!!!

Not sure what the "Tone" Pots are, but I have other guitars w/TBX Tones and they are NOTHING like this one. This guitar ABSOLUTELY SCREAMS!!! The control and range offered by the Tone Controls is like nothing I've every played before.

Went back and reviewed the eBay Auction for E 900046...other than the fact it's Serial Number indicates it's a 1989 and it calls the finish a Blackburst, maybe it's more correct informationally than I gave it credit for being.....

"This is a rare 1990-91 Fender Custom Shop Prototype Stratocaster Ultra in Blackburst with a matching painted headstock, Gold Lace Pickups, a factory German Floyd Rose with the locking nut and Clapton modification.

This is the first year Fender factory installed Floyds and possibly one of the first to have a locking nut not the Wilkinson Roller nut on most Plus and Ultra models. Stays in tune whenyou use the tremolo.

This Custom Shop Ultra has the Eric Clapton mod; a mid-range boost/roll off that is used on the Eric Clapton model Stratocasters today. The neck on this guitar is thin, quick and straight as an arrow.

You won't find another one like this in Black burst a rare finish used by the Fender Custom Shop with painted headstock to match! Also included is the original tweed case with crushed purple interior.

Ultras were introduced for the first time at the NAMM show in 1991 and were only made until 1995. The Ultra was the top of the Fender line higher than the popular Plus model."

Most likely the battery for the EC circuit is under the pickguard in the control cavity. The E9+5 serial numbers went from late '89 through early '90. It was not uncommon for prior year SN's to trickle in to the next year for a few months.

Re: Any Info??? 1990-1991 Fender Custom Shop Stratocaster Blackburst Floyd

I'm going to check the Trem Cover tonight to see if there is a Battery Compartment.

Q: What would you get if you crossed a "Clapton Signature" Model with a Fender "Hot Rod Reissue (HRR)" (but w/a thinner neck back profile more like a Fender HM Style Neck)???

A: My C.S. Stratocaster!!!

Re: Any Info??? 1990-1991 Fender Custom Shop Stratocaster Blackburst Floyd

the battery is probably under the pickguard, at least it has been on the ones ive seen

That CS logo is usually used for store or FSR runs.

$800-$1000 guitar.

Re: Any Info??? 1990-1991 Fender Custom Shop Stratocaster Blackburst Floyd

Not really worried about the value on it...I did fine on the purchase. I will have to say that I am seeing some differing info out there on the Early Custom Shop Models...

EARLY FCS LOGOS - supplementary (1987 - early 90's)

Earlier oval style and "artist palette" Fender Custom Shop logos may or may not include builder signatures (this one does). Either way, due to their age but depending upon condition, guitars with these logos tend toward vintage and collectible status. Their values will be quite variable. Just do your research, get all the info and contact Fender Support for cross verification. Then seek an appraisal from someplace like www.gruhn.com where clicking on their "Appraisal" link provides a full rundown of what's needed to establish an instrument's value.

Wow.

And how much did you get yours for, if you don't mind me asking?

Re: Any Info??? 1990-1991 Fender Custom Shop Stratocaster Blackburst Floyd

Thanks folks!

TLD: I purchased mine from Guitar Center for $749.99 - the price of a used American Standard Strat. It had been there for a few days and someone else locally or at the store had posted an inquiry on the Fender Forum seeking info on it but didn't receive a reply. I saw it as soon as I walked in the door and it never left my hands until I had put it on layaway, as I decided to sell a first year 1987 Ibanez 540R Blue Burst that I had just picked up to fund the purchase. I went back in and paid it off 3 days later. It really is an amazing guitar with all the features and the electronics. Best Strat I have ever had the pleasure of playing and the tonal variety and sounds are amazing.
