They're the same speaker as the Modern Lead. IMO, they're a very good, warm sounding speaker and as good or better than most non-Celestions. But there are other Celestions that sound A LOT better to me. The G12M70's are not quite as crunchy or as bright as my favorite Celestions: Vintage 30's, G12H30's or the Greenbacks or the Alnico Blues.
They're good for an amp that is on the bright and brittle and overly trebley side...they'll warm up the tone of an amp like that and add some Celestion crunch and chonk. My buddy uses a set in a '77 Fender Twin Reverb...sounds very good!

It looks like the new classic leads are now 80 watts but these are 70. I just found the spec sheet on an archive page. Its funny you think they're not as bright or crunchy as the V30 when I imagine the Classic Leads splitting ear drums in the 80's in walls of MarshallsBut I havent played a cab lik ethat for years, so I dont recollect. I was thinking of maybe doing the X pattern with 2 V30's.
Had a set of 4 in a cab I found at a pawnshop for 200 bucks, worked well with my boogie- not so well with my marshall.
I did the same thing  I'm thinking your right on the demand for themI was just on Ebay looking at Celestion speakers.
The G12M70's start at under $20. each used! (laugh!) That should tell ya something about their desirability and lust factor. Classic Lead 80's don't seem to go for much more.
G12H30's go for around $125...they're the ones the guys are lusting after.

I've been reading alot of good things about Webers speakers, but there again I'm at square one.
$125. on ebay? a bit high don't you think- esp when you can get them from Avatar cheaper, or any internet store for the same price, w/free shipping!
New ones are made in China...older ones are made in the UK. I was looking for older used ones.

I see, plus, I thought you were saying they were a buck twenty five on ebay
BTW Lew- what do you think of the made in China vs English made- personally I really can't hear a difference, at least not enough to pay the difference. I'm not talking about the hand-formed ones (Heritage?), just the older English made models
