Re: Any info on Celestion G12M-70's

They're the same speaker as the Modern Lead. IMO, they're a very good, warm sounding speaker and as good or better than most non-Celestions. But there are other Celestions that sound A LOT better to me. The G12M70's are not quite as crunchy or as bright as my favorite Celestions: Vintage 30's, G12H30's or the Greenbacks or the Alnico Blues.

They're good for an amp that is on the bright and brittle and overly trebley side...they'll warm up the tone of an amp like that and add some Celestion crunch and chonk. My buddy uses a set in a '77 Fender Twin Reverb...sounds very good!

It looks like the new classic leads are now 80 watts but these are 70. I just found the spec sheet on an archive page. Its funny you think they're not as bright or crunchy as the V30 when I imagine the Classic Leads splitting ear drums in the 80's in walls of Marshalls :) But I havent played a cab lik ethat for years, so I dont recollect. I was thinking of maybe doing the X pattern with 2 V30's.

Greatly said. I agree. They're great speakers, but there are much better Celestions. I use a G12 Century Vintage. Sounds great.

The 70 watt Modern Leads (G12M70's) are a differant speaker than the 80 watt Classic 80's...they sound quite different too, IMO. Eric Johnson was once a fan of the Classic 80's, although he doesn't use them now.

I like the Classic 80 better than Modern Lead 70. I hear the Classic 80 as being like a cross between the Vintage 30 and some kind of "American" tone.
But they're brighter and more aggressive than the Modern Lead 70.

I know the G12M70's well...I had a set of four for years. I tried them in my 4 x 12 Marshall cab, in a two 12 cab and finally sold two of them to my buddy Duane who put them in a Twin Reverb where they finally found a permanant home. The other two I had I sold to a guy who used them with a Sovtek head and a 2 x 12 homemade speaker cab.

They just didn't have enough of the classic Celestion tone for my tastes...but they're still very good speakers.

Thanks for the info Lew, that gives me something to think on. I dont know if these are for me or not, now :)

Re: Any info on Celestion G12M-70's

Had a set of 4 in a cab I found at a pawnshop for 200 bucks, worked well with my boogie- not so well with my marshall.

Re: Any info on Celestion G12M-70's

I was just on Ebay looking at Celestion speakers.

The G12M70's start at under $20. each used! (laugh!) That should tell ya something about their desirability and lust factor. Classic Lead 80's don't seem to go for much more.

G12H30's go for around $125...they're the ones the guys are lusting after.

I forgot to mention that this was like 15 years ago- back then, speakers didnt come in so many flavors, it was hard to get raw Celestions- so I thought I got a good deal.

I did the same thing  I'm thinking your right on the demand for them :)
I've been reading alot of good things about Webers speakers, but there again I'm at square one.

Personally, I like Celestion 12's better than any other brand, including Weber.

And no clone of a Celestion actually sounds exactly like the Celestion it is supposedly cloned from. Even when they do sound very good, the clones all fall short of nailing the Celestion tone.

But I do like and use some of Ted's 10's.

$125. on ebay? a bit high don't you think- esp when you can get them from Avatar cheaper, or any internet store for the same price, w/free shipping!

New ones are made in China...older ones are made in the UK. I was looking for older used ones.

I see, plus, I thought you were saying they were a buck twenty five on ebay
BTW Lew- what do you think of the made in China vs English made- personally I really can't hear a difference, at least not enough to pay the difference. I'm not talking about the hand-formed ones (Heritage?), just the older English made models

There's some of the Hellatone G12H30's on ebay for about $70. each...didn't actually find any of the old ones I was looking for though in 8 ohms.

Did see some of the new Gold Anniversary G12H30's for $130.http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Celestion-G...ryZ43375QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I have not tried the Chinese made Celestions. I've heard they sound identical and according to Celestion, the Chinese ones are made to closer tolerances...of course, they would say that! (They want you buy their speakers!)

Re: Any info on Celestion G12M-70's

well today i did a side by side closed back 2x12 test of my WGS v30 replicas(after breaking them in this past week...)with my friends V30 loaded avatar cab...

and they are very much tonally the same...maybe i should have dug out my SM57 and made clips? He thought mine sounded more aggressive...

I have no idea on the China vs. UK made differences though...they still sound amazing thats for sure...

Re: Any info on Celestion G12M-70's

hehe one of those g12m 70's on ebay is mine ;) along with my jcm 800, 900, a classic lead 80 & some other stuff (ebay ID "ecstasteve" sorry spammy!) I used to run all my cabs with a mix of modern lead 70's and classic lead 80's.. these days i am digging the sound of an EVM12L paired with a v30.

Re: Any info on Celestion G12M-70's

In the late 80's I picked up a Randall 2x12 cab loaded w/t Celestion G12M-70's . Sitting on top of that cab. I had a fender Super 60. I could never get ''THE TONE" from that setup. So The blame instantly went to the crudie Red Knobs amp. So I dumped the super 60 in favor of a SF Twin. Then I got the smart Idea to pull the Celestion's from the cab. and put em' in the Twin for a more Rock'in Tone...All I got was uber Brightness or Mud? So I figured it must be the crappy CBS SF sound was the culprit. So I removed (what I thought where my prized Celesion's) returned them to the cab. and dumped the twin. (Fast foward 10 years) I just finished building my Marshall 2204 clone. While debugging the build I used a old Alnico speaker and it sounded great! After everything was good to go with the 2204, I rolled out my Good Ole' 2x12 Celestion G12M-70's cab,Blew the dust off it ,And sat the new 2204 on top. I flipped the switch... and it was DEJA VU back to the Twin!! Bright or Mud.:eyecrazy: I pulled the G12M-70's from the cab and put a V-30 along with that old Alnico...It sounded GREAT! So 15+ years and 3 amps to find out I don't like G12M-70's .:banghead:

Re: Any info on Celestion G12M-70's

Man, thats a long tough lesson to learn, especially losing those amps!

Re: Any info on Celestion G12M-70's
