I've got a couple of Old peavey cabinets loaded with Black Widows and Scorpions. I think they sound great. Any one else have any love for these old Peavey cabinets and speakers. Ya know, if it don't say Marshall, people wanna assume it sucks.

I used to love them, and would load all my cabs with scorpions, just because Celestions weren't readily available/affordable back in the day-
The Black widows were very good- sounding close to an EV speaker as far as being clean sounding. Still sound great on bass.

I LOVE BW's. We use them in the band's PA speakers. They can take anything!

Re: ANY love for old Peavey Widow/Scorpions?

My old Peavey cab has Sheffields in it, and it's been blowing away other cabs for years. There's a big bottom end, but with punchy mids and highs. It mixes well with my style because i tend to go for mids and highs to cut into a mix anyway. It's a perfect balance and I got it super cheap way back when.

Re: ANY love for old Peavey Widow/Scorpions?

they were great loud speakers for clean tones.... or for guys that didn't like speaker break up that much

Re: ANY love for old Peavey Widow/Scorpions?

I had some scorps. They were tight and super crunchy in the mids. The 80's/early 90's "crunch guitar" tones really excelled through those old scorps. Right now I wish I still had a pair to lay rhythm crunch tracks. My 12's are J.F. Nayors which completely smoke, but they're very Jensen-y and papery. They're perfect 90% of the time but sometimes you need a scorp to rock out man!

I think you get it-they has this unique crunch tones. Also, they get very nice cleans as I recently eaned, especially with an open back cabinet. At the time, i wasnt concerned with cleans.

I've wanted to try out both kinds for quite awhile. The widows aren't cheap from what I recall, though.

Re: ANY love for old Peavey Widow/Scorpions?

I dig the Scorpions mixed with V30's in a closed back cab.

Re: ANY love for old Peavey Widow/Scorpions?

Both are and were great speakers! I used to like the Scorpions in my Peavey VTX Classic combo that I had ions ago.The Black Widows were better..

Re: ANY love for old Peavey Widow/Scorpions?

Did anyone find that the Black Widows were just a poor man's EV? I feel like the Scorpions had a sound that couldn't be duplicated otherwise, but the BW's performance and tone could be matched with with the right EV's. I can't say for sure though, because I never owned the BW's. I just remember that sentiment from back in the day.

Re: ANY love for old Peavey Widow/Scorpions?

My 12L is a lot cleaner and louder than any BW I remember playing. The BW are very cool though.
