any love for the Dimarzio Super 3?

Re: any love for the Dimarzio Super 3?

Welcome to the forum.

I almost bought a Super 3. It would have gone in the neck position of a Fernandes Revolver to compliment the Super Distortion that I installed in the bridge position. i.e. Pretty much what DiMarzio designed the Super 3 to be.

For what it is worth, I eventually went for a pre-owned PAF Joe.

That's what dimarzio designed a super 2 for. I have no experience with any of the super d's but I plan on it

Re: any love for the Dimarzio Super 3?

The Super 3 is a bit hotter than the Super D, it would have overpowered the Super D easily in the neck position. It's a great pickup, I had one for years and I'm thinking about getting one again because I miss the sound of it. Tons of mids, thick but tight lows, round but present highs, and very high output. It's quite aggressive sounding and a lot of people (myself included) consider it one of the best Dimarzio's out there for old school death metal tone. That doesn't mean that's all it can handle obviously, it's just great at making a superstrat style guitar sound fat and juicy. The cleans were also surprisingly good as well (IMO).

It's been a while since I've heard a Super D in person but I remember the Super 3 being louder, more mids, tighter on the low end, a bit more "modern" in a way. It's hard for me to describe since I had limited playing time with the Super D but I preferred the Super 3 more. Hopefully someone who has both can chime in and help out a bit more.

One of my favorites, I def would not use one in the neck though, I'm pretty sure Funk is talking about a Super2.

Ironbird pretty much nailed it, I'd just add that it has a really cool crunch to it. Doesn't only do deathmetal, but if you're going for a Carcass sound, this is your pickup.

Re: any love for the Dimarzio Super 3?

hello,

anyone have experience with the Super 3?
Yes. In HM Strats. It was designed for this guitar. In fact it wasn't for sale to the public for a while after the HM strats were out.

how does it compare to the Super D?
Thicker in the mids. Seems like more output / modern.

No problem.

FWIW, it's the standard pickup in Jackson PC1's as well.

Super 2 is a great high output neck pickup, if that is what you want in a neck pickup. Non muddy, designed for the neck specifically.

If you put a Super 3 in the neck, on the other hand, you'd be in for a bad surprise. That is the diametric oposite of what it was designed for.

I like it much better than the super D, a pickup I just have never liked. The super 3 is big in mids, has very rounded highs, and is smooth sounding, unlike the super D which is gritty sounding. If you have a very bright guitar and need to tame that aspect, it will do it and sound good doing it better than just about anything. I have one in a guitar that even a breed was a bit bright in, and it does a great job there.

Re: any love for the Dimarzio Super 3?

thanks for the replies!

I've got a Carvin ST300 that's on the bright side. I'm gonna try the Super 3 in the bridge and maybe the Air Norton at the neck. although the Humbucker from Hell sounds like an awesome neck pup for clean tones (which I mainly use the neck pup for anyway) :scratchch

I don't play death metal, mainly thrash and some hair.

:thanks:

No worries on thrash, it will handle that as well. If you're looking to tame a bright guitar it's a nice choice and I think you will enjoy it if you're looking for a Dimarzio for that purpose, especially as a thrash guy. Good luck man! :friday:
