Re: Any Mahogany-bodied Tele users in here?
In the late 70's I started cobbling tele and strat partscasters from various suppliers, Schecter, Warmoth, etc and two fellas I met that made bodies and necks. Some of them turned out great and others were OK, but no great shakes. I stopped around 1995, but in 2002 I got the itch to build 'one last' tele. I called Tommy at USACG and asked him to make me a chambered mahogany body (and to pick the wood for it's tonal qualities over looks) and a killer neck.
This was the first time I actually spec'd out every aspect and detail based on my playing style, tone preference and neck radius, width, frets, etc. Well, Tommy delivered big time and exceeded my expectations. This guitar became my #1 from the moment I strung it up for the first time and to this day, continues to inspire me every time I play it.
Mahogany has always been my first choice for guitar bodies. Perhaps because my first 'real' electric was a 1957 Les Paul Special (I found in the basement of my gramma's house) and the tones of that guitar with it's mahogany and P-90's is still the benchmark for me.
I understand you asked specifically about solid bodies and not thin-lines, so take my comments with a grain of salt, but since I'm an old fart with a bad back, the chambering was done as much for weight as it was for tone.
I've tried a ton of different pickups in this guitar and with a set of Fezzter Oildales, it twangs as well as a couple of older, ash body teles I had....a 67 and a 71. The 71 tele by the way was one of the better sounding teles I've had. However, as much as I love teles, I'm an old blues hound and twang (as much as I dig it) does not relate well to my style of play, so I go for more beefy tones. I have used various low wind PAFish pups in the neck, (along with several nice bucker sized P-90 types...with the BG Pure 90 being the best) and darn near every type of tele bridge pup from vintage wind single coil to pups ala the HD S-90 to blade buckers ala Dimarzio Tone Zone T to tapped broadcaster to Don Mare 0038 to Zhang Paul Bunyan (my fav) to Bill Lawrence 290-298, etc.
I met a fella here who winds pups and told him of my problem finding a bridge pup with more beef and less twang that I can live with. I should have that pickup any day now and I'm excited to give it try. While far from traditional in magents and output, I have a good feeling it will be just what the Dr ordered.
Anyway, I got way off the topic, but suffice to say a mahogany bodied tele is by far my favorite. Oh yeah, I finished mine (and neck) with 11-12 light coats of tru-oil and I love the beautiful color and organic feel it provided.
