Any opinions on Hamer guitars?

Hi all:

I just played a Hamer for the first time the other night, a used (recent) Newport. I was very impressed with the quality. The neck had a great shape, was rock solid and the fretboard was perfect. While I wouldn't buy Newport (don't want the spruce top or the bigsby), it has me seriously thinking about tracking down an Artist. I've never thought of these guitars before. So for all of you who have one or have previously owned one.....what do you think? How do they compare to other guitars you own or have owned?

Thanks, Rusty

Re: Any opinions on Hamer guitars?

Very very sweet alternative to that "other" company with the QC issues

Re: Any opinions on Hamer guitars?

i think theyre great, i played a used one, not sure what model, but it was about 300 with SDs in it... o it was great! i wish i wouldve gotten it that... theres no way its still there

Re: Any opinions on Hamer guitars?

Hamer's are like some other guitar companies, the upper end stuff is fantastic, and the low end stuff can be hit or miss or a little better.

Overall a Hamer is a fine tool for the trade, and the high-end stuff is fantastic.

But, you gotta play a guitar to find out if it is for you. Nothing else matters.

Just for clarification, I mean USA Hamers.

I've always looked past the Hamers hanging on the wall. Playing that one really caught me by suprise.

This is a good thing, you weren't mesmerized by the looks of the guitar.

I would go play it again. It was free, and you had fun. :)

Re: Any opinions on Hamer guitars?

I just bought one, it should be here later this week... I'll let you know what I think.

Re: Any opinions on Hamer guitars?

I've never played a USA Hamer that didn't impress me with the workmanship. I think they put a lot of effort into their manufacturing process.

Re: Any opinions on Hamer guitars?

I love my Hamer. I play it more than my LP standard, and the LP is the guitar I always wanted.

The Hamer is just that good.

I tried, but two days later it was gone, so I guess it was a good one. It was the second best guitar I played that day. The first one was a strat. Of course I wasn't looking for a strat, but when does anybody buy a guitar they were looking for? :laugh2: The strat was gone I went back too.

I'm guessing it's because you've somehow become hopelessly lost in the 80s. This peculiar affliction is known amongst SD forumites as 'RGN disease'.

Unfortunately, I'm stuck further back than that. I think it was that one day back in 197..... oh nevermind!

to answer the main question: USA Hamers are great guitars. Go for it.
RGN? What does it stand for? Is there a cure for it? Can I live? :smack:

Re: Any opinions on Hamer guitars?

I went to one Jol Dantzig's seminar's and was thoroughly impressed. The attention to detail and the time put into each piece is absolutely amazing. The fit and finish is flawless on everyone I've seen/played.

One bad, bad, bad downside.

They're infectious and they'll give you genital warts, I know this b/c Rob told me so!

Regressive Guitar Noodler. (Republican Guitar Noodler?)

Symptoms:

-a distinct affinity with 80s-era 'physical therapy' playing styles.
-fits of uncontrollable anger at the mention of words such as 'Cobain', 'Grunge' and 'hip hop'.
-a distinct taste for 80s super strat mosquito tone machines.

Prognosis: non fatal.

Cure: Not being allowed to listen to any 80s hair rock for a period of 6-10 months. Even then, patients can be known to occasionally lapse into George Lynch flat 5th wheedle spasms and take swings at anyone who mentions The White Stripes. Whilst this can be embarrassing in public (think Tourettes), it's not harmful long term.

Disclaimer: if you read this, RGN, think of it as fond parody from someone who's been there.
