just curious if there are any other amps in the twin headroom range for cleans
any other basic clean BF twin style amps out there?

I'm using a Carvin MTS head with Svetlana el-34's into an old 2-15 Dual Showman cab.
The MTS has the best clean sound I've heard from a 100 watt head. I can crank it up full and it barely breaks up. I got it with JJ 6L6's in it but it was too bassy. The El-34's are much sweeter sounding. I originally wanted a Dual Showman head but because I've had Twins in the past I could never get enough clean volume before the amp would break up. Used MTS heads and combos can be had pretty cheap. Not so crazy about the distortion channel but I prefer to use pedals anyway. Excellent reverb and even at full volume it is a very quiet smooth sounding amp. Check Carvins forum for more info.

My favorite sounding cleans at this point are as follows:
Boss GT-8 -> Mesa 50/50 power amp (EH 6L6 Tubes) -> Marshall 2x12 sealed cab (Celestion V30/Electro Voice 12L) and Vox 2x12 open back cab (V30/G12H combo).
I set the Boss GT-8 to the clean Hughes & Kettner Triamp setting, add a touch of spring reverb, and use the Compressor models in the Boss CS compressor setting for light compression.
I get sparkly cleans with lots of character, a very natural sound, and crushing volume (when I need it

Fender Twin/Dual Showman, HiWatt DR103, or any Ampeg, 100 watts and over will keep you nice and clean. JC-120's are known for a killer clean. A Vox AC-30 has an amazing clean tone, but it's not as loud as a Twin.

tone stack wise how does the twin sound up against the HiWatt or an Ampeg?
Does the master volume on the hiwatt negatively affect the tone? I'm a simple amp guy, i'm satisfired with volume, bass, and treble. Does the hiwatt have reverb? Whoops i forgot to say that at the beginning of my thread!

The Hiwatt and Ampeg amps aren't based on the same circuit as the BF Fender circuit...The Hiwatt is all about a Marshall and leans more towards a Fender Tweed Bassman tone....
Why not just look into an actual BF amp or get a Silverfaced and convert it over to BF,or a reissue Twin perhaps? The Fender circuits are all about the 6V6 and 6L6 tubes....EL34s don't give you the BF Fender tone which is warm,full,round,and with more headroom..
The tone stack is the combintation of caps and resistors that set the eq for the tone controls....The questions need to be based on how the entire preamp is setup though..Not just the tone stack... :13:

there's no way in hell that i could find an actual BF twin in my area. I was looking for any BF amp for the past two years in miami and i had to settle for my bandmaster. I'm getting rid of my JBLs for a hefty ebay payoff and with that cash i'm planning on a clean amp with reverb with lots of watts!
So i guess twin RI it is!

So a reissue BF amp is out of the question then? Why not buy a BF Fender if that's what you want?

and, since im keeping my bandmaster and it gets a nice cranked verge of tube overdrive type sound, i'll probably get an amp switcher so i could use the twin for cleans, then switch to the bandmaster throught the twin's speakers.
I meant i was going to get the RI to begin with, as soon as i raise 1000 bucks. It would be nice to have an acutal twin, but i know that i can't find one in my area, and the jackass who will sell it to me will try a price range like 2000 bucks.
I'll just get the RI with a warranty and consider my equipment woes over. I always wanted a big clean amp sound with no frills and i guess the twin is the ticket. In many cases, vintage could equal a headache!

Try to grab up a nice used BF Twin reissue....It's hard to get any other amp that gives you BF headroom..This is the "King" of BF headroom... :dance:

Maybe it's me, but I've never considered BF Fenders as amps that generally have lots of headroom. The whole thing with amps like the BF Vibrolux Reverb is that it will break up sooner than the SF Vibrolux Reverb. If I were looking for definite headroom, I'd take a SF Twin over a BF Twin. Am I missing something here?

The BF Twin Reverb is and always was all about headroom....Loud and headroom all the way up high on the volume control...You're talking about the lower wattage 22 thru 40 watt series,these do breakup at around 4 to 5 on the volume control...The Super Reverb is only 40 watts also...

what's the diff between black and silver besides power? I'm pretty sure the BF amps have a smoother more pleasing breakup? And the components in BF amps were much higher quality right?
The thing too, is that a BF Twin sounds really sweet at 4-6 on the volume (scorching loud!) because it's closer to breakup than a 100 watt or higher silverface. Eventhough it's still squeaky clean, the tubes are able to deliver more character than when they're not even close to working hard in a SF.
