Any Peavey/EVH Wolfgang Users here?

Hey guys.

Over the next few months I'm thinking about getting myself a new guitar and, if I can find 1 for the price I'm looking to pay, I'm really considering a Wolfgang of some kind.

Just wondered if there were any users here who could give me some pointers or things to look out for etc and possibly how the differing models play and sound etc.

Quite an open ended question I understand but at the minute I'm just looking for peoples experiences with these guitars.

Thanks for any info you can offer.

Craig

I've played one just like this guitar in the picture (same colour) a few weeks ago in the store and I must say I really liked it.:) I wasn't too crazy about the body shape at first, but I found it to be a very well-balanced guitar. The neck feels excellent and I think it has a compound radius fingerboard which I think plays killer fast. I would advise you to play one to see if you really like the style & feel. It might not be for everyone, but the playability is there and then some.;)

I want to like them, but I cant gel with the small frets and clubby feeling necks. Not trying to put negativity into your advice thread, but pointing out what stands out to me about the guitars. On a positive, I have a bud that had one of the wolfgang specials, (flat top) and it sounded killer!

I'm a huge fan. One of my main guitars is a Peavey Wolf Std.

If you like the neck profile (and it's quite unique, so I guess it's a love it or hate it sort of thing), you have a few choices:

- Peavey Wolfgang, probably the cheapest though I guess some people don't give it the time of day cos it says Peavey on the headstock... but that's a mistake.
- EVH Wolfgang (USA) - now discontinued, very expensive. Personally, not worth the extra cost, though you get stainless steel frets for your troubles.
- EVH Wolfgang (Jap) - also now discontinued. Reasonably priced. However, I found that the neck profile was NOT exactly the same as the USA models, which turned me off them.
- EVH Wolfgang (China) - the current line. I haven't really spent time with one of these, but as far as I can see they are being priced at the same price point as the Japanese models were... which I can't really get my head around.

Or you could go for the Musicman Axis route. The neck profiles are pretty much identical to the Wolfgang. They usually don't come cheaply, though.

I think you're a bit incorrect here...

The Peavey Wolfgang is still very well regarded. However, back in 2002, when I had a choice to buy an EBMM Axis or Peavey Wolfgang, I played the two side by side, and the EBMM was the better guitar- better wood, better tone... They've raised the prices on the EBMM Axis over the years, though I've seen very nice ones on the used market in the $750-$1000 range. The Peavey was a little more comfortable with the arch top. They early Peavey Wolfgangs were stunning. All I would do is change the pickups to EVH Wolfgang pickups since the Peaveys were too hot and dark.

The EVH Wolfgang is not discontinued, it's the Wolfgang Standard. There's also the Wolfgang Custom, which are EVH's take on a Les Paul, and completely different with a stop tail and 24 3/4 scale length- basically a Les Paul Copy

Then there's the EVH Wolfgang Special. It was previously made in Japan, but Jackson/ Fender had to abandon Japan as a viable manufacturing country due to the fallout after Fukushima. Now they're made in China.

Next in like is the EVH Striped series, which is a single pickup strat shape. I prefer it since it has jumbo as compared to vintage size frets (though the Striped frets are not stainless- polish them up and they come close), but more importantly, the neck is wider at 1 11/16, compared to the 1 5/8 on the wolfgangs, which feel tiny. These cost $899 new, and with a proper setup are amazing guitars for the price. These are currently made in Mexico, and considering their high quality, I wouldn't be surprised if the Wolfgangs get built in Mexico soon.

Ah, my mistake - for some reason I had it in my head that the EVH USA Std line had disappeared. I wonder where I read that?! Obviously I'm wrong.

I actually really dig the pickups in my Peavey Wolfgang Std. They certainly are a bit too hot for the EVH purist... but they work really well for me.

Re: Any Peavey/EVH Wolfgang Users here?

Thanks all the opinions and info guys, I appreciate it.

I've found a USA Peavey Wolfgang Special for cheap, so hopefully there will be a NGD thread soon :D

I asked for opinions mate, good and bad, so no need to apologise!

Re: Any Peavey/EVH Wolfgang Users here?

That creamy one looks nice.

I haven't properly played a Wolf but felt one up to see what the neck was like and seems quite good.

Where's Jolly? He's got a MIJ one.

Re: Any Peavey/EVH Wolfgang Users here?

I have a MIJ one I love it, stainless frets you cant beat! the smaller frets are easier to play riffs and play faster on the neck compared to my Gibsons. I had to lower the poles on bridge pup on the 1st 2nd string by a turn, its smoother playing at loud volume. Some said there going out of tune when dive bombing due to a long bolt at the nut so you may have to put 2 washer behind them.

Re: Any Peavey/EVH Wolfgang Users here?

The Peavey specials have soft frets I wouldn't do it get the EVH

Re: Any Peavey/EVH Wolfgang Users here?

I had a Peavey wolfgang special for around 9 years and recently sold it.

The neck was great but the flat top body felt really uncomfortable to me.
I recently played a US and Japanese EVH Wolfgang. They were surprisingly beautiful......BUT.... if it was my hard earned cash, I would go a Purple Axis without flinching.

Re: Any Peavey/EVH Wolfgang Users here?

Purple is sweet! I had the yellow one couple of years ago but had to sell:(

Re: Any Peavey/EVH Wolfgang Users here?

About 10 years ago I had a MIK special for awhile. Barring the screwy reverse toggle, I loved that guitar. Great player,.super solid build, nice piece of quality basswood. I am not a floyd fan, but I have owned some very sought after/well respected guitars with them over the years..usa jacksons, charvels, old MIJ Ibbys, Kramer, charvels, etc., and I would take that Wolfie back before any of them.

Re: Any Peavey/EVH Wolfgang Users here?

Thanks for the posts guys. I'm still hoping to pickup the gloss purple USA Special that I've found but not 100% sure yet.

A friend of mine has a sunburst Musicman Axis and it's a nice guitar, I just don't have the money for anything like that I'm afraid!

Re: Any Peavey/EVH Wolfgang Users here?

I just bought an EVH Wolfgang USA Stealth Hardtail last week. It is a great guitar. I actually bought a wolfgang special (made in China) and after playing it for a week decided to trade up for the USA. If you have the extra cash, I would recommend the USA. Everything about it was better than the special, especially the tone, feel, and setup. The guitar as a whole is top notch, and I couldn't be happier with it.

awesome man! I think the maple cap makes it! non floyd helps also in tone.

I agree. I have an 80s Kramer with a Floyd and while it's cool to have, it's also a pain in the ass. The hardtail is great, especially with the locking nuts. It won't go out of tune no matter how much bending I do.

Thanks! So.. you got the special?? Cool! it has ALL the tone. I loved the tone! I had a Carvin MTS3212 at that time and could get the browns with that axe..

Oh... oh.... Schwing!!!! I LOVE the look of that!!! Black and purple quilt are like a centerfold for me.....

Re: Any Peavey/EVH Wolfgang Users here?

Nah, I missed out on 2 USA Specials for £350 a piece :banghead:

You can find some pretty cheap used EVH Wolfgang specials out there. I like the sound and feel of them more than the peavey wolfgang, but that's just a personal preference. If you decided to go that route, try to grab a made in japan version. They are better made and sound much better than the made in China model.
