Any pedal builders out there doing older boss copies????

Re: Any pedal builders out there doing older boss copies????

The Swedish guys usually ran their HM2 into the dirty channel of a JCM800. Same idea as having an OD behind it. At The Gates used an HM2 in series with a MT2 Metal Zone for the Slaughter Of The Soul album. You'd have to be stomping on them during breaks though, because of feedback.

You could also try to find a DOD Super American Metal. Also nails the Swedish sound with all knobs cranked.
The more expensive option would be the Wren and Cuff Hangman.
Last couple of times I saw Entombed, they just used a DS-1 with an EQ though.

Can't believe the prices these days. Got a Japanese version for 20 bucks years ago.

Re: Any pedal builders out there doing older boss copies????

I have both the HM2 AND American Metal. I like them both.

But…before I went around boo-reeking or modding, I'd just find a different pedal that did what I wanted.

Re: Any pedal builders out there doing older boss copies????

I have an FX56 American Metal. You can tell they're related, but the single tone knob makes it difficult to dial in the chainsaw. I've been trying to find someone to add the HM-2 EQ (or maybe a full TMB EQ) and rehouse it for me for a while.

Re: Any pedal builders out there doing older boss copies????

I could also build one for you... if you need PM me.

Re: Any pedal builders out there doing older boss copies????

Considering the HM2 uses gyrators to control its eq, adding them and removing the tone circuit wouldn't (imho) be worth it. You'd be much better off getting a clone built, which would most likely be cheaper in the end and getting you closer to the real thing. I'm not trying to get more money/business with this, just giving advice and stating my opinion.

I've got the Super American Metal FX56B. It has 2 tone controls and works excellent for the Swedish sound. I like it more for that application the HM2 actually. Such an ironically named pedal :lmao:.
A little heavier on the bass than the HM2 and just fuller sounding overall.

Re: Any pedal builders out there doing older boss copies????

I got the impression from a guy that looked at schems for both pedals that it wasn't a big deal. Bummer.

What if I want to rehouse it anyway? The switch is intermittent and it's missing the battery door, won't work with normal power connector, etc.

Well, maybe I'm wrong, I'm not familiar with the American metal. My assumption that it doesn't do the tone control with gyrators like the hm2 is solely based on the fact that it has only a single tone-knob. It's not impossible to have a single tone-knob that's acting on a gyrator eq but, IMHO, that'd be quite a waste.

About rehousing: It shouldn't be much of a problem if you can find either a replacement switch or if your builder/rehouser can switch it with a good quality one.

Still trying to figure out what I want to do about this....Surgeon you think this would be a tough pedal to build????

Not moreso than any other... Give me until tonight and I'll post picures of the one I built...

Re: Any pedal builders out there doing older boss copies????

I completely forgot about you, very sorry. Will do it before I hit the road for 3 days this morning..

Re: Any pedal builders out there doing older boss copies????

Here you go:
This one has a mid pot but I can easily build it stock without it, no problem.
Of course, it's all true-bypass so no input buffer.

PM me if you have any questions. I'll be out of town for 2-3 days but will do what I can to answer PMs.
