Any Resonator Players On Here?

I'm thinking about selling/trading my Edwards LP for a nice mid-level resonator guitar.

I never play the LP anymore - it's all my Tele and Juniors these days and I don't see that changing soon. I just prefer single coils and simpler guitars.

I've been wanting to add an acoustic to my arsenal for a long time and always figured I wanted a nice Gibson flat top, but I've come to realize that it's the raspy, resonant sounds of a reso are what really get me going. Especially with fingerpicking and slide stuff.

I don't know if I want a wood body, all-metal, tricone or duocone, national reso or dobro (or what), I just know that I definitely want a round neck and it needs to top out around $800.00.

Are there any resonator players on the board? Any help or advice would be awesome!

Re: Any Resonator Players On Here?

I May know of a really nice Ozark Resonator with Piezo system for sale in the UK, Used but in as NEW condition.

It's a Mate's. I need to check if he still has it, and what price. I think it's in your price range even imported.

I'm a bit of an international freight and import duty expert, particularly Trans-Atlantic, so could keep those costs as low as possible. Particularly if you don't mind it coming on the 'slow-boat' service, so to speak.

Fender FR50 has a wood body & is pretty fun for slide & picking. Buy used & $ave.

If you can get me what model it is and what your friend wants for it, we can talk!

Good lookin' out, man.

I tried half a dozen Fender resos in both wood and metal body, and didn't find a single one that beat my $300 Epiphone Biscuit. In fact, I have played current production Dobro resos that got their asses handed to them by the Biscuit.

In case you didn't figure it out by now, I'm recommending the Biscuit. Easily the best acoustic instrument Epi makes, and easily the best reso in that price range. Get a Fishman Resophonic pickup and a Quarterman cone for it, and you're still coming in under six hundo.

Re: Any Resonator Players On Here?

i play an old national sometimes and i love it but a) its not mine b) im sure its expensive

the fender wood ones usually suck, the metal ones are a little better but ive only played one that was really any good. "dobro" (owned by gibson) are real hit or miss. ive played a few that were very nice but more than half were dogs. never tried the epi biscut.
in general the single cone with or without spider is going to be louder than a tricone but maybe not as complex or rich sounding. there are a number of smaller builders who have crafted some nice instruments and sometimes can be had for a decent price.

Re: Any Resonator Players On Here?

Thanks RD and Jeremy!

I'll try to play a biscuit and see where it gets me.

Jeremy - I'm not AS worried about pure volume - I doubt I'll be gigging with this thing - but complexity and tonal range are paramount. Sounds like I def. need the tricone. Any idea who those builders might be, or where to look?

Re: Any Resonator Players On Here?

well, i saw a great used dobro for $800 that was made by this guy outside of syracuse. gloss black body, great feeling neck and a nice tone, it had a spider style bridge. couldnt tell ya his name though. sorry.

if its something you want, id just keep your eye out and see what you come across.
