Any set rule for pickup height?

I've always wondered if there's any set rule of thumb to how close a humbucker pickup should be to the strings.

I know all about magnetic pull from single coils...and loads of other crap.
Just wondered, I've always ended up about 3-5 mm from strings to pickup in the Bridge position and a little more distance for the neck.

Anyone have any insight on this?

Thanx, Guys...

Keith.

Re: Any set rule for pickup height?

theres a page on the duncan site and various sites that reccommend, but not a set rule for how high. i think the one most reccommended is 1/16" (not sure what that is in millimeters) away from the strings.

but like most would reccommend putting it all the way up until the string is almost touching the poleieces/ rails or whatver, and then lower it by turning both screws a quarter or half turn each, and testing it, and repeating until you find desired height. or start all the way down and go up with the same method.

some people like the pickups really close, some (like myself) like them low.

1/16" is pretty exactly 1.5mm.. if I were to set my pickups that close I´d bottom out on the bridge pu on every fretted note above the 12th, if not earlier....
