Hey, i recently bought a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe 40watt tube amp and although it sounds great (very loud!!!) i'm wondering, since im new to tube amps, how much of a difference different tubes make and whats your favorite tubes.

Re: Any suggestion on tubes??

I've never been a 6L6 amp owner so I won't comment on power tubes.

but for the 12AX7s I'd say go NOS if you can afford it, at least for the 1st preamp tube. Even the $20 "almost NOS" stuff generally sounds clearer to me than the best new production stuff.

But if it's new production stuff, it's up to your tastes.
Go with a JJ short-plates to have a darker sound
go with tung-sol to have a even, clear sound
try electro harmonix if you like a little brighter sound.

the stock sovteks are bound to be the WA, WB, or WC types. I find most of those to sound a little muffled and so yes, I think upgrading would make an audible difference.

Re: Any suggestion on tubes??

HRDs can be kinda bright on the top end, so i reccomend JJs all the way thru.
However....money would be much better spent on a good speaker.

yeah I forgot what amp I as talking about for a second.

Eminence Texas Heat is something I can personally recommend in anything fender-y. Assuming the stock tubes aren't dying yet, I'd take that speaker of a full retube any day.
Try the cannabis rex... it seems to be doing well for PGS's blues jr. Sounds like just the ticket for the HRDx

Depends

if you use the gain channel i'd go with the warmest tubes you can find, probably jj's all the way across the preamp, maybe even 5881's in the power amp, i dunno if they can handle it or not someone else may wanna chime in. But yeah, i'd go jj 12ax7 v1 - jj 12ay7 v2 - jj 12ax7 PI

If you just crank the clean channel i'd go with something dirtier and brighter, like tung sol or shuguang 12ax7's--12at7 in the PI if you play clean

Either way if you play it at giggable volumes I'd swap out the speaker first and foremost. Weber ceramic california or eminence wizard would be my top 2 picks for either clean or dirty in these amps.

A friend of mine, works in a local guitar store, and he loves the JJ's in his Hot Rod 4X10 combo.

And yes, it is a ((( L O U D ))) amp !

I'm gonna make a different recommendation here...

Get to know the amp first.

When you determine EXACTLY what you wish it had more of (or less of) THEN consider a tube swap or mod or what ever.

You want your tone to move in your direction...not in any random direction.

Save your money...then, when you know what you really want, make a deliberate, calculated decision.

It's kinda like you don't book a weekend in Vegas with some chick if you don't know if her snoring is gonna be what keeps you up all night.
