Any suggestions on a nylon string guitar?

I started playing a bit more faux-rock-classical of late. A bit of early RUSH and Yes. The wife digs it and I think I have convinced her I need a new nylon string guitar. My old one is 35 years old and unplayable. I got is for $100 brand new in 1980. I was thinking of picking up this Fender. Solid top and piezo are on my wish list, plus this guitar won't break the bank at $399. Any other suggestions would be huge if you have them. I am not married to the Fender it just seems to hit all the right marks.

Re: Any suggestions on a nylon string guitar?

About a year and a half or two years ago I picked up a Yamaha ntx900fm. About seven bills as I recall. Lovely bit of kit...nice neck/action....decent electronics including tuner. Played a few Yamahas in the store...one was similar and a bit cheaper...I think it was from the same line...cedar top if I recall correctly...darker tone...played just as well. Neck width is wider than a standard steel string but much more narrow than a regular classical so it's not a big leap for players like us. (mine measures 48.3 mm at the top of the neck according to my calipers)

Here's me playing some Bob on the thing about a year ago.

Thanks man the Yamaha line was on the list. They had a guitar in the same price range as the Fender. As always I am digging your vocals and playing.

Re: Any suggestions on a nylon string guitar?

I second the Yamaha
I have owned one back in the 80s
Excellent tone

Way better than Fenders

LaPatrie (by Godin) are nice as well, and relatively inexpensive. I picked up a used one a couple of years ago for about $400 IIRC. I think it was double that when new.

Re: Any suggestions on a nylon string guitar?

The NTX700 will run you about 500 USD new. It really is a fantastic guitar and you have a choice of solid spruce top or solid cedar top.

Re: Any suggestions on a nylon string guitar?

Earlier this year, I got a Cordoba C10 Crossover. It's the nylon string guitar built for steel string and electric players. It's made in China and the quality-to-price ratio is very high. And it sounds great. It does not have built-in electronics. But you could always install a Wavelength.

Re: Any suggestions on a nylon string guitar?

That is a nice sounding axe. I am going to add it to the list. Thanks.

Re: Any suggestions on a nylon string guitar?

I will highly recommend the Yamaha CGX - 171 line. If I were only going to have ONE nylon string - this is it. And I do only have one.
- Action low enough for Flamenco shredding
- Action High enough for decent classical
- Internal condensor AND Piezo for killer amped tone

Re: Any suggestions on a nylon string guitar?

Just pulled the trigger on the Fender. Many things came into play - Fishman electronics, thin neck, solid top and the cut away.

now your prepared for the apocalypse

shred away ------------ Flamenco Style

Re: Any suggestions on a nylon string guitar?

My lead guitarist has a Yamaha nylon string and it's a wonderful guitar to play, even for someone like me who doesn't play nylons.

Sweet! I just saw this post and was going to recommend the Fender nylon acoustics. Hope you enjoy it!

Dig my variax nylon. So does anyone who plays it.

Re: Any suggestions on a nylon string guitar?

I always did like the way the Yamaha NTX series played - good guitar for a someone who typically plays electric or steel string acoustic.

My local guitar shop has gone crazy for Cordoba guitars. The examples that I have seen/heard sounded respectable and were, unquestionably, excellent value for money.

I do not play nylon strung guitar. If I did, my ego would probably demand a Gibson Chet Atkins CE.

Re: Any suggestions on a nylon string guitar?

yamaha apx is pretty good.
Takamine 132SC is even better. Both are proven gig workhorses the world over.

I've owned five Cordobas. They are awesome flamenco guitars for the money.

I like my Cordoba C5-CE, but then I had to go and play a friend's Cordoba Gypsy Kings Studio model. The Gypsy Kings models have a super comfortable neck for players who aren't into the wide fat classical necks.
