any suggestions on gettin SRV neck tone?

Re: any suggestions on gettin SRV neck tone?

do a search...Lewguitar has done a very good...hell, I would say great(it really is top notch), Strat Tone thread...SRV is mentioned several times in it...good luck

Re: any suggestions on gettin SRV neck tone?

clean like lenny or dirty like tightrope

clean id say an ssl1 is a great choice, for dirty i think the antiquitys would be best

any vintage type single will get you close, but there is s much else going on in his tone that pups are only part of the solution

what pup could i use in the 1 position to get pretty close to an SRV type of tone?

You need thick meaty fingers, heavy-ass strings, bass frets & mojo. Oh, what pickup? :laugh2: Antiquity Texas Hot. Good luck.

If you're going to run the huge strings and play with Stevies monstrous attack, I'd stay away from overwound pickups and just use something bright and clean like the SSL-1's or even the Fender CS 57/62's. If you're a mere mortal, the Antiquity Texas Hots will do good job of it.

i use 13s on that guitar. i like darrin's idea about the texas hots. they will complement my lil 59 i think

+1 He used a lot of amps together and cranked them up too. Here's a Guitar Geek for what he used from 88 to 90 http://www.texas-legend.com/burning_strings_setup90.gif, and I also saw an article once with his studio rig and he had a bunch in there too (2 Dumbles, 2 vibrokings, 2 full stack 200-watt Marshalls, and on and on...).

Lindy Fralin Vintage Hots. I've never heard the antiquities but when you find perfect you tend to stop looking.

Re: any suggestions on gettin SRV neck tone?

Antiquity II Surfer neck and middle with Antiquity II Custom bridge 9.7K.
I know the word Surf doesn't sound very Texas-ey, but Alnico 5 Ant's have the big SRV bell tone, especially with an alder/rosewood strat and 11's. Contact Lew, and order that set.

Re: any suggestions on gettin SRV neck tone?

IMO, the SSL-1 and Antiquity II Surfer are similar pickups. The Surfer is more complex and has more personality, but they're both alnico 5 pickups that are very similar to the original pickups in my '63 Strat. Highly recommended for killer SRV, Hendrix, Mark Knopfler, etc. tone. Very bright and bouncey classic 50's/60's Strat tone.

Great for clean Lenny, Little Wing, Riviera Paradise type tone.

SRV's Strat (#1) was a '63 Strat too....just like mine.

I love the Antiquity I Texas Hots too. With his huge strings and all, SRV got a warmer, fuller tone than most Strat players get and the Antiquity Texas Hots can make it easier to get that kind of tone with regular gauge strings and the lighter touch most of us mere mortals have!

I've compared the Fralin Vintage Hots to all of the pickups mentioned and they are awesome too! A little more bass and smoother, more refined highs than the Surfers...a little cleaner, brighter, more aggressive tone than the Vintage Hots from the Surfers.

My buddy AJ came by yesterday and I was listening to him playing all of my Strats with differant pickups in them through my old Deluxe Reverb.

I liked him playing my Strat with Antiquity Surfers best of all.
