Any Tips For Working With The Custom Shop?

After many years of loyalty I'm officially a convert from DiMarzio to Duncan and am planning on putting PATB pickups in most of my guitars, but I'm toying with the idea of getting something special made for my ESP M-II.

I was just wondering if there's a certain way to communicate my ideas to the custom shop to get the best result. I'm afraid if I communicate tonal ideas in abstract terms, things could get lost in translation, whereas if I describe things on a more technical side, I may end up handcuffing them.

Maybe I'm being a bit OCD, after all, the custom shop is the best of the best and I've never read a bad review for anything they've done, but it would be more money than I've ever spent on a single pickup before so I'd want to make sure to get things right.

Unless you're an experienced p'up winder, don't talk tech or specs with'em, as chances are, the info you'll give is incomplete at best and most probably not pertinent at all with the areas you'd like to address.

Just tell'em what you want to get out of it, tone-wise and let the experts do their thing.

Being anal-retentive is both a blessing and a curse. OCD is no picnic either. No blessing, just a curse.

Be as clear as you can be with your custom shop order form. The custom shop called me after receiving my order and were a pleasure to work with, and after chatting about what I wanted, I told them i trusted their judgment and they didnt let me down. The humbucker they wound surpassed my expectations honestly.

If you get to directly talk to MJ or Derek, you should be in good hands. If not, just be detailed in your description. They'll contact you again to touch base and confirm specs. Arwin at the custom shop is extremely helpful at tracking your order and giving you updates. Good luck.
