Any Vox AC30 RI Users Out There?

Re: Any Vox AC30 RI Users Out There?

I had one for awhile. What do you want to know about it?

The build quality may have been a few notches better with the 90's reissue, but I like the versatility and gaininess of the new CC model even better.

Of course, my first choice would be the Handwired LTD. I also like that new Anniversary model, which I just tried at GC last weekend.

I love Vox, but ironically, my 2 Vox type amps, the Matchless and Gibson Goldtone, both hit right and left of center. Neither have the chime of a Vox, but more chunk in the mids and lows. Also ironic is that my real Vox is a modeler, not an AC-30.

EyE!

Happy owner of a mid-90s top boost with Alnico Blues...

Whuz up?

Nice! I have the same thing (alnico blues included).

Okay, what settings work best for you? What kind of guitar do you use most often with it? Which effects seem to take best to it?

Re: Any Vox AC30 RI Users Out There?

It's one of my favorite amps. Ever.

I tend to run the brilliant channel, jumped to normal. Bass & treble maybe 3/4 up and "cut" to a nominal point, wherever it sounds good. I like a "thicker" AC30 tone... running near flat-out with an attenuator.

I love playing that tone. Get some pedals to push it harder... stupendous! I feel like it's "my" amp more then playing the 800 or blonde Bandmaster, though they're very groovy too.

I'm usually playing my LP with an AII bridge, PRS swamp ash with a C5...the Tele... LP special with P90s... EJ Strat... they all sound good! I don't usually touch the EQ once it's set, rely on the guitars to provide tonal changes.

My gigging pedalboard usually has a booster of some type, analog man TS9 and/or a boss EQ for "dirt one" and "dirt two". Usually some kind of phase box or uni-vibe on there, delay pedal... maybe another noise maker like an octave box or voodoo labs Proctavia. Sometimes a wah pedal...

The AC30 also does the clean chimy thing... but I generally prefer blackface Fenders for a clean tone. Not so much a fan of the vibrato but it has it's applications...

When recording... I've used just about everything you could imagine. Some guys plug straight in and love it. Sometimes we've got the big box of pedals out... guitars could be anything.

One of my friends owns a few very choice '60s Gibson ES models... 330, block neck 335 etc. and he'll plug in with nothing more then a cable or his Budda drive box.

But usually, almost 96% of the time... there's an attenuator in-line unless it's a big room while recording and I can run without one.

I also have the whole amp loaded with JJ's.

Come on Keith! You should be telling us which OD to use on it......with your cool collection of OD pedals. I'd be curious to know the results of each one.

Okay, okay. You're right. I will do an OD shootout over the next few days, and I promise to post clips. I'm setting a reminder to myself right now to get started on that.

So you tend to use your AC30 for crunch more than clean?

When I'm playing... yeah. Usually.

Gotta admit though, I'm not much into "clean" tones like some people are. I like a bit of hair on it & feel slightly unnerved playing through something totally clean like a Twin.

What I usually go for with most amps is to set it up for a slight crunch/grind on chords & double stops... or when digging in hard. When I lighten up my attack & roll the guitars volume back a bit, that's my clean tone. I'll kick a pedal on for leads & whatnot.

I'm a big fan of single channel amps...

I do like Riveras & Boogies & whatnot too...

Re: Any Vox AC30 RI Users Out There?

I find VOX's have a certain warmth and 3D quality to the clean sound. Fenders are too harsh and forefront for me (unless laden with reverb and properly mixed).
