Anybody Got An Opinion Between EMG 81/85 Set And A Duncan Blackouts Set?

Re: Anybody Got An Opinion Between EMG 81/85 Set And A Duncan Blackouts Set?

Hey Jolly! Nice to see you around! Been kinda worried as I havent seen much of you lately.. Yeah, I know.. I should pick up the Blinkin phone and give you the call I owe ya.....

Anyhow... Couple of things... I had one of the LTD 1000CTm models (black one) and it was killer!!! Now, I havent tried blackouts, but as far as the emgs, I did the 18 volt mod in mine. makes a small difference. BUt a common thing that is done since the 81 can be bright is simply to switch the 85 to bridge and 81 to the neck. Doesnt cost anything. So give that a whirl. If that doesnt do the trick, then look for other options...

I already threw a set of gold blackouts in it. It sounds killer!!

are the fishman's able to produce a super clean (no grit) clean tone? also, does the neck or bridhe feature an A5 mag vs ceramic?

The fishman fluence classics are very clean especially on voice 1, the Seth lover sounds are very good. The voice 2 isn’t really gritty but definitely higher output, the bridge does a very good JB, the neck is thicker than the Seth with more mids. If your amp responds to higher output with a bit of grit you may get some on voice 2.

I haven’t tried them yet but the fishman classic open coil (non covered) versions have a third, split, single coil voice too. Very clean, very stratty.

The fishman moderns are another thing, voice 1 is active and high output like blackouts, while voice 2 is passive higher output sounds. I hear voice 2 is based on the custom for the bridge. The neck is Alnico 5 and the bridge is ceramic for the moderns. They can get gritty, the amount depends on your amp ,the amount of headroom and the amount of input sensitivity to driving the circuit.
