Anybody have a Seagull acoustic?

I have been looking at picking up another mid-level acoustic. I want a big ol' jumbo ***** that sounds like a million cannons firing when I strum it. Anybody have any experience with Seagull acoustics? I've seen quite a few of them around and they seem like decent guitars, but I figured I would ask around here before I decide to make a move on one.

Re: Anybody have a Seagull acoustic?

Don`t have one anymore, but I as a dealer for about 5 years in the late 90s. Excellent guitars, Robert Godin is one of the few people who`s opinions on luthiereie I respect, and his dedication shows in the details. I`d still recommend playing one instead of a blind purchase, though. ;)

If you meant jumbo literally, it may be a problem, because IIRC they don`t do the Jumbo body, only dreadnaughts.

For what you`re looking foe, I`D say an S6 with a cedar top is probably a good starting point.

Re: Anybody have a Seagull acoustic?

I had an S6 and it projected very well. I sold it a few months ago and traded up to a Taylor 114 mainly because I wanted a brighter sound. The cedar top on the S6 was a very warm tone. A good choice if that's what you are after.

Re: Anybody have a Seagull acoustic?

BTW, I`m basing the cedar recommendation on "I want a big ol' jumbo ***** that sounds like a million cannons firing when I strum it."

To me that says " I don`t do much fingerstyle or chicken picking on the upper strings, so I want a guitar that will just blow the walls down with thick, full chords while leaving most of the definition intact"

Should any or all of those assumptiuons be off, you will have to adjust accordingly ;)

Re: Anybody have a Seagull acoustic?

+1 for Robert Godin. I love my 5th Avenue, and the Tric case is pretty sweet too.

You nailed it.

I have a Takamine with great action and a neck that's like 2mm wide. I tend to use that for finger picking riffs. I just need something that frets chords well (a bit of a wider neck than the tak) and projects like a jet breaking the sound barrier.

Re: Anybody have a Seagull acoustic?

I like Seagulls, but even more than them, I love the Epiphone Masterbilt series. I have an AJ-500R (Advanced Jumbo) from them and it's amazing. Its full and rich and will out "boom" any Taylor or Martin at 2x-3x the price. The only Dreadnaught style guitar I've played that could keep up with it is a Collings D2HG. Unfortunately, they don't make the AJ-500 anymore, but if you can find one used, they should be in the same price range as a used Seagull. Also, get one with electronics, the Shadow NanoMag pickups are really nice.

Re: Anybody have a Seagull acoustic?

As prev stated, Id try the S6 too. Very nice guitars and that model has a nice warm sound.. never seen a seagull dread tho, but Im sure I only know part of the product line..

Re: Anybody have a Seagull acoustic?

I loooove Seagulls. I had an S6 but had to sell it to pay a big bill. I really miss it.

They do have a great tone and feel. Very thin finish on them too but they're durable at the same time. Very big, deep, articulate tone, the kind of tone you'd expect out of a more expensive guitar.

Re: Anybody have a Seagull acoustic?

I played a bunch of mini jumbos when I was looking for a decent acoustic several years ago and ended up with a Seagull. I don't play it a whole hell of a lot but every time I do, I'm happy I bought it. In my price range there was nothing else even close.

Sorry, I don't remember the model.

Re: Anybody have a Seagull acoustic?

I have a Seagull Maritime CW with the LR Bagg pickup, which on this model includes the QII, a little mic inside the guitar that blends with the piezo with its own level control. Awesome guitar in the 'bang for the buck' department ...
When I first bought it I used to lay it flat and leave my Ebow resting in different strings for long periods of time , resonating away. It fools the guitar into thinking it's being played and brings it to life in no time.
Robert Godin used to come into Steve's music in Montreal, where I worked, every year on the day before Christmas Eve with two cases of champagne , a gesture for the staff for helping him in the early years .... A super-nice guy ... He would usually bring along a few prototypes of new models, which were always awesome to play....

Re: Anybody have a Seagull acoustic?

I own a Seagull and have been selling them at our shop for a couple years now. Yes, great guitars.

One thing I would recommend based on your description of what you want: try both the cedar topped AND spruce topped models side by side if you can. It sounds to me like you might be better served by a spruce top, but of course your own ears will be the best judge.

Re: Anybody have a Seagull acoustic?

I've had mixed experiences. I've played several Seagulls that were owned by friends. Some of them were fantastic. Others felt and sounded stiff and ... weird - like they were made of hard plastic instead of wood.

I actually have had much better experiences with the other Godin acoustic brands, such as Simon and Patrick (owned one for many years). I just rented a La Patrie classical for a recording session and I was very impressed with it.

Re: Anybody have a Seagull acoustic?

My son bought an S6 from Robert Godin. He plays it all the time. It's a great guitar for the money, but I wouldn't call it a cannon.

Re: Anybody have a Seagull acoustic?

Pics or it didn´t happen :D

Which one did you go for?

Y'know... one of them like wooden ones with 6 strings. It's hollow in the middle as far as I know. It's got some electrical knobby sorta deals on the side of it.

It's definitely a guitar.

Re: Anybody have a Seagull acoustic?

What model dammit!

I know I'm late to the parade, but Seagull acoustics are (in my opinion) the best guitars in their price range. From the build quality, to the finish and of course the sound...I'd take a $400 Seagull over pretty much any other <$800 acoustic I've tried. I also recommend people try the 'slim' neck if they don't get along with the 'normal' Seagull shape. I'd love to have an S6 Slim.

And this is coming from someone who works at a guitar store, so although I don't own one, I get to play and compare many models multiple times a week!

Re: Anybody have a Seagull acoustic?

FWIW, I believe mine is a Maritime Mini Jumbo. I love it, all except for the weirdo hs.
