Anybody have any experience with the Dimebucker?

Hey all.

Does anyone have any experience with the Dime in a short scale SG or PRS style axe?

How hot is it exactly (when compared to say, a DD or a Custom)?

Is it really that bright? I was looking at the tone chart and the resonant peak is pretty similar to the SD, which I think is just fine in the treble frequencies.

Thanks in advance. :friday:

Re: Anybody have any experience with the Dimebucker?

how bout in a Dean ML? it really rips. Not so bright as when used in something long scale, it is BRIGHT, but use the tone knob. And it's hot as hell.

If I could describe it I would say it's hot, bright, clear and thumping percussive. Real killer

Holy Crap!

I just put one in my Hamer.

This thing screams. I'll write a full review after I put it through its paces.

I tried it in an all mahogany epiphone zakk wylde lp, and it rips without bringing that harsh treble. I also put it in a maple guitar..man, was the treble ice picky. Great pickup and it delivers the goods, but tone-wise, not for me.

Re: Anybody have any experience with the Dimebucker?

I didnt find it overally bright, I found it to have this super annoying fuzzy/fizzy buzzsaw treble that never seemed to clear up. Me and it didnt get along.

Re: Anybody have any experience with the Dimebucker?

Just playing it at bedroom levels, I'm hearing it as VERY clear and detailed. It's almost like a cross between a tele bridge and an EMG 'bucker.

Harmonics jump out of this one. It's not subtle, but it's fun.

I'll get to know it a bit better before deciding what I think of it. :burnout:

Yes, another thing I didn't like about it is the slight twang it gave when you're playing heavy rhythm. Never had I heard a high gain pickup give a slight twang. I know dimebag did this on purpose as a Texan..loves that twang. Don't get me wrong, but it still sounds rich and slighty thick for a high treble, high gain pickup.

XL500, try one.

If you're talking about the stew mac version, I did buy one, but never installed it. Reason why, the quality looked so poor and there were bare wires visible on the sides of the pickup..where the wax pot wasn't properly filled. It looked like a homemade pickup. I was appalled. The other 500XL pickup from Bill and Becky Lawrence seems to have a great positive reviews.

Why would we even talk about the POS Stew Mac version? We know our pickups around here.

Re: Anybody have any experience with the Dimebucker?

I've always liked the dimebucker, but again, certain pickups in certain guitars sound better.

The dimebucker owns in a large dean, I also had one in a natural ash tele which was a pretty heavy guitar and it sounded good as well.

I have a few blade style pickups, a GFS crunchy rails sounds really good in a schecter, a BLUSA sounds weak in a schecter, but strong in a dean, and I haven't tried my other dimebucker in a schecter yet, waiting on a pickup ring for it.

*My other dimebucker, you can see down into the pickup between the coils and the casing on the two outer sides where the bobbins round in, doesn't really look like there's much wax or anything in there, just a bunch of open space, should I inject something down in there and fill it up towards the top?

I wouldn't try anything unless it's microphonic. Then, you can't just inject stuff in there, you actually have to pot it.

I've had good experiences with those pickups...sometimes the QC is a bit sketchy, but for the most part every one I ever had sounded pretty good. If you get a bum pickup, BLUSA will take them back and send you another, no problem. I just rediscovered the one in the bridge of my Explorer yesterday, and it sounds BRUTAL and not microphonic at all, like a lot of people complain about.

It also helps that at NAMM 2 years ago, EZ was selling them for $28 a piece and I walked out with a backpack full of them...

I mean, shouldn't it be full of wax though? I have this led pen light (which is amazing for guitar work or getting a lot of bright light into small areas) and it looks like there is possibly a coating on the coils, but definately not fully sealed like I would expect on the dimebucker, especially for having a pretty much sealed bottom except for the hole for the lead wires and another small hole in one of the corners on the bottom. It may not be microphonic now, but with all that room in there, I'm sure it will eventually start to shift around somewhat.

I got some GFS pickups and when they say potted with enough wax to make a candle they were't kidding.

Re: Anybody have any experience with the Dimebucker?

I thought the Dime was sealed in Epoxy.

If so, will it ever need to be repotted?

Re: Anybody have any experience with the Dimebucker?

If they're supposed to be sealed my sure as hell aint. Guess I should shoot an e-mail to SD.

Re: Anybody have any experience with the Dimebucker?

I meant epoxy potted, not epoxy sealed. Mine has the spaces between the coils and the outer ring like you described. I get zero hum or feedback running through some pretty ridiculous amoounts of gain.

Re: Anybody have any experience with the Dimebucker?

yea, there's no problems with the pickup, I just thought if there was a way to prevent anything possibly in the future, I just don't like seeing all that open space in there.
