Anybody here ever have to "relocate" a bridge (in particular, a floyd)?

Snoogles

Cranky-dologist
the saddles on the floyd cant be moved back any further, and i still cant get the D and G strings to intonate properly.
i've tried to locate posts that have a larger pivot diameter, but no luck.

has anybody here ever plugged the stud holes and re-positioned them? how'd it go for you?

I would think the problem would be on the nut
something has caused that end of the string to lengthen

clamp may be fouled

but thats me

What is the guitar?

Have you tried a different set of strings?

While we are at it, what kind of strings are you using and how old are they?

i think i just found the problem, i'm using Graphtec stringsaver saddles:

If it`s an OFR, Schaller, or Gotoh floyd, the saddles are not the problem, the (important) measurements are identical to the originals.

I have a suspicion... What kind of guitar is this, and is this the original Floyd? It`s quite common for guitars that had a Schaller or Schaller clone as original and were "upgraded" with an OFR to have, because the saddles move forward 1/16" relative to the nut.

Doweling and redrilling will work just fine as long as there`s enough wood left for the studs, which could be a problem on a recessed Floyd.

its a jackson dkmg. replaced the jackson-licenced floyd with an ofr, and replaced the original saddles with the graphtech. but by the look of that picture (i don't have the original saddles to compare myself), the extra length towards the rear would account for the problem i'm having.

edit: the OFR will be 1/16th closer to the nut than the lisenced?

The ones I have are maybe .5mm longer than the original saddles if that, but if your`re hitting the whale tail then you could mill /file a bit off the back without compromising structural integrity. I was under the impression that you weren`t getting enought travel because the saddle wouldn`t have enough length in the tips to get locked by the intonation screw, as bottomoing out on teh tail is uncommon.

Only if the original trem was a Schaller or Schaller clone, which have a baseplate that is 1/16" longer from pivot point to forward intonation travel stop. But I know for a fact the factory trem on a DKMG was not a schaller clone but a takeuchi-made JT-580 series trem. So, no.

thanks for all the info Zerb

I just removed the OFR and now i'm noticing that the inserts for the pivot posts do not exactly line up to the floyd's blade crescents. the holes look to be a couple millimeters closer together. is that the standard way these insert holes are drilled (so that the contact area rests more on the saddle-side part of the crescent)? does/did the JT-580 have its pivot blades closer together than the OFR?

I'll take pictures, but here's a crude diagram

I don't think the floyd is going to work with misplaced studs.
