Anybody here use a wireless system?

Re: Anybody here use a wireless system?

I use a Sennheiser G2 as do my band mates, so 2 guitars, bass and a vocal mic. We've used them for around 4 years now without even 1 hiccup! Not cheap but great quality. I hear that the line 6 G series wireless systems are excellent too.

Re: Anybody here use a wireless system?

I'm using a Samson Airline for more than 10 years (10+ hours each week). Bulletproof. Never had a signal dropout. I have the strat shaped transmitter, but also use it, sticking out like a sore thumb (literally), with my LP and my RG:

I was surprised when I saw the recent tour of the Shadows: the two guitars and the bass were using Airlines. If the thing is good for Mr. Marvin, who am I to disagree?

...forgot to add: the Airline also handles my Carvin AC 275 (active LR Baggs ribbon transducer) beautifully.

Re: Anybody here use a wireless system?

Unless you absolutely have to use a wireless system, don't use one. A decent cable will always sound better. Any time i've seen wireless sytems used by local acts, they just stand on the small stage and don't go anywhere a cable wouldn't handle (in fact they usually never move more than three or four feet away from their amp), leaving me to assume they're just wankers caught up in the hype.

Re: Anybody here use a wireless system?

Actually the Line 6 solves that problem with a cable emulator on theirs and the Shure model from what i've seen and heard sounds the same as a cable but I would still have cables as back up. I don't need a wireless right away but in the future I would like to have one.

Cable emulation ? Ummm, okay.

I'm gonna shut up and go back to the 1970s where people plugged a guitar into an amp with a piece of wire (actually i never left the 1970s). There's too many people in bar bands now with stadium equipment and all the attendant complexities, and much of it is never used to it's true potential. Just more crap to go wrong on the gig, and more crap to worry about.

But then i'm old, and know nothing.

Re: Anybody here use a wireless system?

In the ultimate anti-punk move, I used a wireless system with my bass in our punk band. I did, however, use it to go run around the crowd and pogo-bounce with the kids. :D

...and that's why I use a good ol' cable when recording. But on stage, with rock volumes and rock audiences and rock noise levels, I seriously doubt you can hear the difference between a cable and a decent wireless. You must have Eric Johnson's ears.

And a wireless is not only good for antics or, as you said, for "wankers caught up in the hype" (no offense taken, by the way). A wireless system isolates you electrically from the rest of the rig (no more ground loops, no more shocks when touching the mic, etc). You can leave the stage to check the FOH sound (that's important for wankers who play small places that don't have the space for a sound man in the middle of the crowd). Changing guitars mid-set is a breeze (with the Airline, can't speak for the others).

Once you try a decent wireless FOR LIVE WORK, it's hard to go back to being leashed to the amp.

I have a Line6 X95 wireless that I used for several years. It started having dropouts and it seemed like it was the cable so I got a new one but it still drops, even when I'm standing right on top of the receiver, so I think there's an issue in the transmitter. It's digital and between digital and analog for wireless, I'll take digital every time.

I picked mine up used and had to fix a couple of issues caused by abuse from the previous owner, but never had any dropouts. I just like the fact that I don't have to worry about stepping on a cable, especially in a crowded environment.
