Anybody own any celebrity owned gear?

Re: Anybody own any celebrity owned gear?

I got a plectrum that Mark Jansen of Epica threw me. The marking upon the pick begins to fade...the writing which at first was as clear as red flame, has all but disappeared...a secret now that only fire can tell...

Yup
:D

Mark Torien wins the prize (I think he spells his first name differently).

Jon Anderson wasn't very pleasant.

Both of the Wilson sisters were very nice.

Rick Allen was quiet but a real nice guy. He'd just hang out at some shows when Def Leppard was off.

Not a "rock star" but anyone remember Tiffany? Friendly to everyone. Felt bad for her, she ended up playing to 700 in an 11,000 seater.

Re: Anybody own any celebrity owned gear?

Marc Torien? Really? How long ago was that? I think I heard that back in the day, but he "seems" pretty humble in recent interviews. Could be an act or maybe the years have brought him down a notch..

Did you meet Tiffany in her teenybopper singing years, or post PB?

Re: Anybody own any celebrity owned gear?

Bought a Strat from John Hayes forever ago. When he was in a cover band w/the singer from Jackyl.
He ended up playing w/ Mother's Finest & at least one of JJ DuPree's side bands.

I don't think anyone's impressed by that, or even knows/cares who they are.

I did say "was".

This was all back in the 80's. I have no idea what Torien is like today. Lot's of bands passed through, only a relatively few of the people are memorable for one reason or another. But it's not like I sat down with them. In retrospect, it was a cool job. But more important, it paid pretty well for back then.

Re: Anybody own any celebrity owned gear?

No gear, no rock stars, but I did live next door to Shaquille O'Neal AKA "Shaq" for around three years? My dad & his stepfather we're both in the U.S. Army and we all lived on base while stationed @ Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio TX. At the time I was about 11, of course this was before he was huge. To me he was just a very large man who would ride his bike by my house all the time. I remember he looked very scary to me, 7'8 tall or something crazy! After we had lived there for about 6 months he walked by & said "hello", he had this very soft voice and seemed very friendly. It was almost like talking to Mike Tyson without all the ear bites and wife beatings?

The first time I remember anyone talking about him & basketball was during his senior year @ Cole High School, by this time his parents & he I assume, knew he was going somewhere but nobody knew just how far! After he left home his step dad who was also the athletic director of the resource center on base & involved in just about every aspect of every youth sports would give all us kids shoes/jerseys (I'm guessing perks from choosing the right school) & all of a sudden we had great new Football, Basketball, & Soccer equipment, non of which was bought by the military!!!

I think the coolest thing I ever saw the man do (I mean his dad) was fix some holes? At the time drive by shootings were quite common off bases & every once in a while they would spill onto base? This was pre 9/11 & the gates to housing were unguarded until 9:00pm, today they would probably have a Predator on them & a hellfire up their but before they hit the freeway!

Anyway, the community center got shot up one night (while empty thank god) & the guy was up there first thing in the morning to start fixing it up! Military mornings start early & he was doing this in his off time, so he was starting at like 3:00am!!! I guess greatness in some men is put there by great men?

I know it's off topic & more about a celebrity's father than the man himself but a cool story anyway...

Re: Anybody own any celebrity owned gear?

Sold a house to Oteal just up the street from me does that count LOL?
Seriously in Birmingham Alabama if you have been around music for any time you rub shoulders regularly with folks who have toured world wide so it's not a big deal( it would freak most out if the REAL musical and artistic impact of this area was known!!!).

Strange, you dont hear of Birmingham or even AL being much of a celebrity spot.

I guess I should mention that I own a couple pieces of gear that were owned by Ascension! Got a few rungs up the ladder in earlier years.. ; )

Nostalgic,
Cool story! I like to hear when celebs are cool and his dad sounds quite repectable. Yeah, Im a firm believer in that parents should instill that in their kids. Many of the probs today is that kids have no proper guidance and they learn bad behaviors from associates, tv or what have you.. But Ill stop here as this could open some big cans o worms and/or get way off topic... I'll just conclude with saying, Ive not accomplished anything major in my life, but I have tried to teach my kids about respect and hard/honest work.

Then, my friend, you have indeed accomplished something major. Passing real values on to our kids is a big deal.

Re: Anybody own any celebrity owned gear?

I appreciate that. But I feel like I was just doing as I was supposed to. Its kinda neat to see.. My kids cursed us growing up because we asked things of them that some of their friends didnt have to do.. Now they are grown or nearly grown and its pretty cool to see them practice those things on their own.. My 20 yr old went for a job interview. Lady asked her for a reference address or number or something. My daughter asked her: I have that on my phone, may I take it out and get it for you? She said the lady was floored that she asked permission. She told my daughter it was refreshing. she told my daughter that often does interviews where the people wont stop checking texts during the interview. and nearly everyone leaves their phones out. She got the job...

It was what you are supposed to do. The problem is that less and less parents do. What we do or don't teach "our" kids is likely to be passed on through generations. I'll stop now, since it's off topic.

Re: Anybody own any celebrity owned gear?

My very first guitar was a maple-necked creme Kramer Classic 2000, loaded with SD SSL-1's, supposedly previously owned by Derek St. Holmes, who played with Ted Nugent for many years.

Never had any documentation to support it. I sold the guitar because it was just so freaking *BRIGHT* between the all maple neck and the SSL-1s (and I'd tried some questionable things to try and tame the sound  ). The one thing I didn't do is the one thing I should have tried - a neck with a rosewood fingerboard.

That guitar had an interesting design though, in that while it was basically a Strat, there was a fourth pickup off to the side (theoretically, RW and *always on*), for noise control.

None, and I absolutely do not care other than if something was potentially very valuable because of a previous celebrity owner.

I also don't particularly care what year the instrument was built in, other than the aforementioned potential for high value. I'm not nostalgic/superstitious in that way. I can judge for myself how I bond with it in the present.

I'm more likely to like old amps or effects that have quirky sounds than guitars. For example, I played a friend's '69 Fender Champ that had nothing until you got until a volume of about 9, then started to wail righteously!! That's cool, and no "modeling" required. And I do have a certain weakness for vintage grill cloth.
