Nope. Ever notice how you can't buy Duncans in double creme unless you special order 'em, and they're shipped with a gold or nickel cover? You can't get double creme Duncans from Musician's Friend, Sam Ash, etc., etc. Well, maybe you can, but only if you buy one with a cover on it and get lucky and find double creme bobbins under the cover.

The whole double cream trademark would probably get struck down in court anyways. Is it even possible to trademark a color? WTF?

Edit: apparently it is possible to trademark a color for a product...

I don't even consider Dimarzio pickups. The company does too many scummy things, and I like being able to sleep at night.

Well, they didn't trademark the color creme, as you can get Duncans and such with zebra bobbins, which are black and creme. They just trademarked the double creme bobbin look.

Duncan should start selling double slightly lighter cream. Its technically not cream.

How do you guys not know about the double creme thing? It's been debated on here many, many times.

I don't remember the details.

The patent only exists against big companies or something like that. Little companies/private parties can still do the double cream thing.

Yeah, but they'd probably still be sued for it, and I doubt they'd want all those lawyer fees.

And the kicker to this whole thread.....???

The Musician's Friend ad is.....WRONG.

Sorry, but according to the GIBSON website, that guitar--GOTW Week 44, the Les Paul Standard "Unburst"--is fitted with.......DiMarzio PAFs.

(Cue the music from "The Twilight Zone" theme.)

My work is done here.

Re: Anybody seen this weeks "Gibson Guitar of the Week"? (Double Creme Pup Content)

Actually, if Gibson chose, there is a way around the trademark issue. Dimarzio's patent only applies to pickups- i.e.- commercially, consumer available aftermarket pickups...

If Gibson decided to make a double cream PAF, and only offered it on their guitars, did not sell it aftermarket, then it could be seen as just a component of the entire guitar and would not violate any trademark.....

Buisness wise? Dimarzio could still sue Gibson. Though Gibson would win, the cost of paying legal fees to defend the lawsuit would be more than the profit of those guitars- so it's just cheaper to give in to Dimarzio.

I guess your right about it not applying to small outfits. I had WCR wind me a "Crossroads" pickup set, where the bridge pickup is double cream a,d the neck pickup is zebra. Jim never said anything like, I can't do that because DiMarzio won't let me.

DiMarzio's cream has a matti surface which I like better, and I think everyone else's are a bit glossy. You can't see that until you're up close though.

I thought maybe someone had gotten the double cream trademark thing tossed out. It's just too ridiculous.

You'd like it if it were a mint-green-to-bubblegum-pink burst.

Re: Anybody seen this weeks "Gibson Guitar of the Week"? (Double Creme Pup Content)

Wow, that's scummy. Come to think of it, I hate my local big guitar store even more now; when I bought some DiMarzios a while back, they even told me they couldn't get the pickups I wanted in double-cream. ... The hell? If DiMarzio has a friggin' trademark on the double-cream thing, you would assume that a huge, GC-like store with buying power would easily be able to get me the double-cream.

Heh... I love guitars... I HATE doing any shopping related to them.

Trademark, yes. Patent, no.
