Anybody usin' a Digitech Bad Monkey?

Well I've got the EL34 Traynor for that classic Marshall sound, a Keeley modded Boss MT-2 for those bang-yer-head moods and wondered if a Bad Monkey would cover the vintage tones. Whatcha think?

It does the tube screamer sound better then a tube screamer. You should have no problems getting a vintage style OD.

Re: Anybody usin' a Digitech Bad Monkey?

Yes, absolutely. It's a great pedal for that very purpose or it rocks hard through an already crunchy amp.

Re: Anybody usin' a Digitech Bad Monkey?

Gives a pretty mild overdrive sound, definately not a distortion pedal. Seems to sound better on a slightly overdriven amp than trying to overdrive the clean channel. At least to me anyway.I compared this to the tube screamer and kept the bad monkey and returned the tube screamer. Sounds nice through me Delta Blues 2x10.

Re: Anybody usin' a Digitech Bad Monkey?

The bad monkey is very compressed and smooth sounding. It is amazing for early zz-top type tones that have the rounded off top end and big fat mids and lows. Set up a nice tube amp for a light overdrive that just starts to crunch when you dig in. Then kick in the bad monkey. You get a smooth fat tone that really sings with overtones and complexity. I was blown away when I first heard one. I sold it to try a few pedals like the Barber Direct Drive, Paul Cochrane Timmy, a COT 50, Fulltone Fulldrive, Fulltone OCD.... the list is too long. To make a long story short, when trying out all those expensive pedals, I was wishing that I still had the bad monkey. The direct mixer output actually sounds really decent as well, which is a bonus if your amp goes down on stage or something.

Looks like I'll pick one up. I'm amazed at all of the reviews I've seen other places that also rave about how great this pedal sounds with many others also preferring it over the Tubescreamer. The addition of the Bad Monkey should cover all my bases. Thanks guys!

how's the other analog pedals by digitech?
like the screaming blues,

How do you think the Bad Monkey would sound thru a Fender DRRI? I'm not trying to nail anyones tone, just trying to find the right OD pedal for that amp.

For a while now, I've been considering selling my Tubescreamer Turbo and getting a Bad Monkey.

I can vouch for this...

Sounds great! Get the DRRI up to just before it breaks and let the Bad Monkey cover the big shove over the edge!

like the screaming blues,

The Screaming Blues is more of a distortion. I use it with a Boogie Mark IIB to push the overdrive channel. I like having a high and a low tone control.

So the Bad Money is a Tube Screamer clone?

Kind of, but not really?

It does sound very much like one. But with the ability to tweak both the bottom and top end it gives a certain quality to it that almost totally divorces it from the qualities you find in the Tube Screamers.

To me it sounds like a less authentic Tube Screamer, but does have a very much desired flexibility.

I've got the Bad Monkey and the Hot Head distortion. I compared the Bad Monkey to a few Tube Screamers and I like the Monkey better. While the Hot Head Distortion sounds pretty good, the Carl Martin Plexitone is way better--a different league. When comparing the two, the Hot Head sounded like half the sound was removed. Kinda like mono compared to stereo, even though both were run in mono. Tried them both through 1-12 combos and 4x12 piggybacks.
