Anybody with a DSL40 I have great preamp tube combo

Hey all you Marshall DSL40C owners I came up with a very nice warm and smooth sounding preamp combo. This tube combo seems to really tame the gain and fizz on this amp.It makes the gain way more usable in the Ultra gain channel lead 1 and 2. In V-1 I have a JJ ECC83 MG(Mid gain). In V-2 I have a JJECC83-s.In V-3 I have a JJ 5751 (70% lower gain than a 12ax7).In V-4 I have a Sovtek 12ax7 LPS. To take care of any microphonics I have two rubber o-rings on each preamp tube and I also have one large rubber o-ring on each power tube.My power tubes are TAD EL-34'S. Try this you will like it.It is a slightly darker combination. However, it makes the treble knob and presence much more usuable along with the gain.

As someone who might well buy a DSL40C in the coming months, I read your recommendations with great interest.

Are you just using the combo cab/speaker?

I fiddled around with a GT5751(probably a sovtek) and a couple old JanGe5751s in v2 and v3 and they were super stiff..and the red channel with the marshall branded tubes are already too stiff for me with the the H30/12mevh in my cab.

I need to pick up one of those sovtek long plates to try as a PI.

Yeah you should really get one they sound fantastic.Even stock they are nice. However, if you can get one I recommend one from Sweetwater music with the already upgraded Celestion Creamback spaker its well worth it. I just thought to my ears with the stock high gain tubes it was alittle fizzy on the ultra gain channels now its much more tamed and sounds great with this combination. The classic gain/clean channell is awesome!!! I live on that channel.

Re: Anybody with a DSL40 I have great preamp tube combo

Yeah just the combo speaker but I got mine with an already upgraded Creamback much better than the 70/80 IMO. And you cant beat the Sovtek LPS for PI. Nice warm sound and works great in that spot. If you use the tube combination I listed up above you shoudl really like the tone.

Re: Anybody with a DSL40 I have great preamp tube combo

I bought the creamback version. It sounds good , but. Im a closed back cab fan, except for classic Fenders.

I already have my v1 taken care of- I have an early 1960s Mullard that just stomps all over modern tubes, but I do want to get rid of the JJ and Shugang Marshall re-brands in v2-v4.

Re: Anybody with a DSL40 I have great preamp tube combo

Awesome !! on the Mullard V-1 nice tube. Yeah defintely try the others if you want they give me a nice sound v-2 thru v-4 also in v-2/v-2 7025 TAD's or Ruby 7025SSHG sound nice there also. But for PI I would go with the Sovtek LPS

Re: Anybody with a DSL40 I have great preamp tube combo

I almost bought one of these. I really like em, very nice amp for the money.

Re: Anybody with a DSL40 I have great preamp tube combo

No offense, but it's a great amp all on it's own. Does it really matter what individual tubes they are? I'd go for reliability since "tone" changes so much...

Re: Anybody with a DSL40 I have great preamp tube combo

I have a few old and newer production tubes and went with a Tungsol v1,v2 JJ803 or RFT v3 Gold lion former v1 tube v4 Slyvania Baldwin long plate. I just came back from Florida to MI and played some cool amps and guitars on my trip!

GC in Orlando I played a Soldano SLO 100 with a 412 orange cab it rocks big time, super loud with just a touch of the master volume, like damm. Then played a couple of guitars with the DSL 40 which was cool. Hit Sam Ash and played the DSL 100,EVH 50 and really liked the Supro 15 watter it has a warm nice breakup. 1400 bucks:) \

Went down to Nashville to see Carter Vintage Guitars, they had a bunch of vintage Marshalls, Dumbles at 80,000 owned by Joe B and Keith Urban! also vintage 1960's fender guitars at 10,000 or so. Played some boutique amps like Tone kings, Swart,Goodsell. There decent but I prefer my DSL. Maybe there better built but the tone wasnt that great IMO.
