Anyone aired or half aired a JB ?

Re: Anyone aired or half aired a JB ?

I am interested in this too. I really have no idea here. Does it have to be air? Can it be wood? Carbon fiber? Plastic? I never really explored experimenting with this.

Re: Anyone aired or half aired a JB ?

I don't know but (my 2 cents) the two Air pickups I've tried had the same 'issue' with the attack of the note: some sort of, I don't know how to explain it, some sort of "delay" maybe?

Re: Anyone aired or half aired a JB ?

What does the air thingy accomplish tonally in DiMarzios other than less output and more sustain? EQ and dynamics-wise, I mean.

I think it's DMZ attempt to reproduce weaker magnet without using anything different than a A5. I really don't understand that but it's a matter of taste.
In my opinion they're undoubtedly dynamic but, as I said, I've never liked the spongy note attac.k

Re: Anyone aired or half aired a JB ?

So the magnet is just moved further away so it isn't as powerful? Can you just lower the pickup to achieve the same thing?

Re: Anyone aired or half aired a JB ?

I'm no expert, but I imagine the effect isn't quite the same, since airing would change the magnetic flux in the poles. Seems to me it'd be likely to interact somewhat differently with the coils themselves, beyond simply weakening the field out at the strings.

Re: Anyone aired or half aired a JB ?

Nobody cares to read anymore? That's the motivation that originated the patent:

"a pole piece of ferromagnetic material extending through said coil assembly and having one end disposed adjacent a string of said instrument and the other end extending towards a pole face of said magnetic element, and non-magnetic means adjacent said other end of said pole piece separating said pole piece from said pole face of said magnet element by a predetermined distance and introducing a gap in the magnetic path between the magnet and said pole piece, said distance being selected to establish a magnetic field of desired intensity in the vicinity of said string"

That's what Di Marzio markets as the "Air Technology"

HTH,

BINGO! That's exactly what it happens and yes, it creates a retarded, spongy effect on the attack.
