Years ago I downsized my guitar gear and kept one electric, a squier Jazzmaster, and one amp, a Bugera V22. Since then I got a couple more guitars but held off on an amp until I felt like I was truly tired of the Bugera or outgrew it or really needed something different/better
The Bugera is okay? It's *very* clean on the clean channel (only edge of breakup cranked)and the dirt channel is harsh and bright and rather farty and congested when boosted, and the reverb is murky and noisy, and while it's lasted years (this is the first model before they added power scaling), I don't think it's easily repaired if anything breaks
And it's just kinda harsh and spikey sounding.
I got a used Fender 68 custom Princeton reverb. Again! This is one of the amps I sold. I was feeling ok about it when I sold it but I dunno what it is, now that I have it back I love it way more than the first time. Maybe I got better at dialing amps in with my ears, maybe my ears changed as I've heard more tones and learned what I like more, maybe I am slightly better player than years ago
Sounds way better for a small room than the Bugera. You can set them up similar but the fender just sounds more focused, more compression, warmth.
The Bugera has more sparkle which is nice for more modern stuff, funk, playing with a ton of modulation effects and stuff
But the fender is a damn Princeton and
68 custom has modified tone stack for more bass and low mids, but I feel like at low bass settings you mostly just get a small mid boost and it sounds as different to a normal PR as like changing a speaker, or switching guitars.
There's also less negative feedback causing earlier more sizzling breakup, you can feel it at low volume even, that's the amp is a hair less sparkly and a touch more compressed than a '65 reissue.
These get a bad reputation sometimes for rattling parts, like tube sockets, but mine is excellent.
The stock celestion Ten 30 speaker can be farty and it sounds small when pushed and a tiny bit harsh but a good match overall for the amp. For overdrive pedals it's a much better speaker to me than the Jensen in the 65 ri.
Overall this is a freaking amazing amp, the volume knob is not touchy, and something about it is just voiced right especially compared to the Bugera which can sound good but always "like it's own thing".
