Anyone else heard the rumor that EVH is moving to Crate?

Re: Anyone else heard the rumor that EVH is moving to Crate?

I liked the Crate V-series tube amps. Actually had a V-series 2x12 50 watt for a brief time and it was not a bad amp at all.

I think when people think of crate amps they think of the cheapo 15 watt practice amps everyone at one time had. Maybe EVH will force crate to come up with something reletively playable...........But I doubt it.I think if ED does go to Crate he'll do what most artists do and endorse a mediocre signature amp and the one he ends up playing will be a modded-to-hell version of that model.

I think Crate is more than happy to stay in that low to medium price range where most people who have a passing interest in playing guitar buy their amps.

Re: Anyone else heard the rumor that EVH is moving to Crate?

Here is the thing.

The wolfgang is no longer going to be made. Unlike the musicman EVH which just changed names to 'axis'.

The 5150 is going to finish its run then change its name (so I hear).

Because the 5150 was widely popular but not really identified as 'Ed's amp'.
The wolfgang actually has the dudes name and signature on it, so its out (unfortunatly cause its one of the best production guitars on the planet).

\m/ Peace out

I find the 5150 and 5150II to be rather harsh in the treble end and non responsive in the mid and low end....they just sort of thud away and go nowhere. At least that is how I myself hear the 5150 models.

I wonder if all the years of loud amps have blown away Edwards high end hearing??

hence the increasing treble of his amps.

Could very well be. You can't help but wonder what the effect's are with that kind of volume on anyone's hearing when exposed to those kind of level's. Especially for a musician like Ed who's been playing at that kind of volume for year's. It's GOT to take it's toll, I would imagine.

Steve Morse uses 5150s, and he gets a great mid/low end..his tone is far from screechy.

Re: Anyone else heard the rumor that EVH is moving to Crate?

I think the Blue Voodoo was an accident in the fact thats it's a respectable amp among the other heaps of crap crate pumps out these days. As far as Ed's tone I feel his best days are indeed behind him tone wise.

Of course there was a rumor that he was moving to Bogners a while back as well... THAT i would believe but personally whatever man its EVH he can use whatever the hell he wants.

Re: Anyone else heard the rumor that EVH is moving to Crate?

I read in an interview with eddie that his doctor told him he has the hearing of an 80 year old. I have the right here right now live dvd and personally i really really like the tone he has on that especially the intro to judgment day its so rough and gritty in the high end i just reckon its sounds beautiful.

Re: Anyone else heard the rumor that EVH is moving to Crate?

I guess the good news is .. they made TONS of 5150's and wolfgangs .. so there's plenty of em out there ..

now that he's done the "anyone, anywhere, can get my amp/guitar" thing .. I'd love to see him go to a small guy .. maybe bring someone out of the woodwork and "jump" start (sorry) a couple carreer's .. he wont .. but that would be a cool move IMO.

I thought this topic read: Anyone else heard the rumor that EVH is moving to Crete?
And thought, heck I'd move to the mediterranean too, if I had the $'s.

I saw Morse with Deep Purple a little while ago, he was using Marshalls insted of the 5150's. I do know that he has been using 5150's a lot and Marshalls.....I saw a clinic with him and he was using 3 little Marshall 401's (sounded HORRIBLE....though his playing is godly)

I don have to add that though Steve is my fav American player I have never been big on his tone regardless of amplification.

Judgement day is a Soldano.....I think the entire For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge Cd has great tone.

Yeah the tones on F.U.C.K. , while not his brown sound, were pretty awesome. I especially liked "Poundcake" with all that sparkle and harmonics flying around.

Do you mean to say that whole record was Soldano?

:laugh2: From an interview in Ritchie Flieglers book, AMPS!:

RF: "Did Leo have what you would call a musical ear?"

Bill Carson: (pause, then laughs) "Leo had ears a hell of a lot like an oak log."

I saw DP a few months back. Morse had a Marshall Jubilee and a 5150, running into 5150 cabs. I was impressed by his tone, which I was expecting to be poor. I'm a huge fan of Morse, but his overdriven sound and vibrato will never be a particular favourite of mine. Still, his live sound was much better than I thought it would be.

Re: Anyone else heard the rumor that EVH is moving to Crate?

means 5150 prices will either dive (as the new model comes out, people go for that)

or soar (as people move to snap up the remaining units)

which one, though?

Sorry you must have misunderstood what i said. Im saying eddies tone on the live dvd is amazing especially the intro to judgment day. Im talking live here not the studio version im not a huge fan of his tone during the sammy hagar era in the studio its to wet and processed imo but live those 5150's sound quite nice to me.

Re: Anyone else heard the rumor that EVH is moving to Crate?

The issue with Crate isn't really the tone, since many people like the sound.
The issue with them is the general low quality of all the parts. They use the cheapest parts they can get away with. Most amp techs actually laugh when the name Crate comes up.

When you check out the later live stuff and CD's his tone is horrible. THere are 2 concert vids I have..one of the Balance tour and one of the III tour. They have the worst live tone I have ever heard.....even worse than the live Blink182 stuff I have seen.

I agree that the Live CD and DVD sound great, that tour in general sounded great.....I wonder what he was REALLY using ;)
