Anyone else intrigued by these two new Yamaha SS amps? (THR100H and THR100HD)

Yup. They're "modeling" amps but they seem pretty interesting. I've only heard them in YouTube vids, but I like what I hear so far. The dual version definitely seems to be the most versatile, but dang! I'd hate to drop a grand on a SS modeling amp. Even if it is a true 100WRMS/ch.

The Sweetwater video seems to be one of the better ones.

P.S. I'd love to see them make the dual version in a pre-amp only version so that you could use it with your own PA amp.

What does it offer that the Fractal Axe FX does not?

Have I just been Dogberted? (APMWTWM) :D

I am not suggesting that you should buy either product. They are just different pathways that may get you to the desired end result. One offers rotary controls. The other is button heavy but has a shedload of effects built-in.

If you're going SS,I've heard/read great things about the AMTs...

Re: Anyone else intrigued by these two new Yamaha SS amps? (THR100H and THR100HD)

I've been intrigued by them for months. I've been waiting for my local shop to get one so I can try it out. The clips online sound AWESOME. It took all of my willpower not to order one from Sweetwater on the two years, no-interest deal over the past couple of weeks. If I wasn't in hock up to my eyeballs with my local shop already with the new Anderson strat and Friedman Smallbox... I'd already have the THR100 Dual based on the clips I've heard. I think they'd make awesome backup gigging amps to my tube heads... or even great to use for the gig as the main amp. I used to gig a Yamaha DG-80 back in the late-nineties for two years and it was a great amp. The only complaint I had about it was the lack of clean headroom for outdoor gigs. Hard to beat a tube amp for that. Regardless... Yamaha builds some of the best musical instruments (and motorcycles) bar none. So I'd buy one without reservation if I had the dough right now.

Based on the THR10 that I had for a little while, I'm guessing they are awesome. I really liked the models in the practice amp.

These seem more targeted at being you main amp that you use with your effects, they don't have everything in one box like a Fractal.

Not intentionally, but I do love Dogbert. Dilbert, along with "Calvin & Hobbs", were two of the best comics out there.

Until I looked it up, I had forgotten that I already researched the Fractal unit. Super cool device, but pricey. The Yammy is already pushing the envelope of what I'd spend. But I might. Wish they made it in a pre-amp only version, to use with whatever PA amp you might already have.

I would change that question into something more practical.

Can this new Yamaha hold a candle to the Quilter series of amps ?

I've always been intrigued by Yamaha products–kick myself daily for getting rid of my Yamaha Motif ES (personally, I prefer the tone of Yamaha over any other keyboard synth out there.) Always wanted to try a Magic Stomp due to the guitar sounds from the Motif...just never saw one in the price I was looking for (and I don't NEED another processor...lol)

I haven't tried a Quilter, but hear good things about them. I guess the question here is, are we talking about modeling (software) amps or pure solid state amps. I know Artie said Yamaha "SS" amps in the thread title, but the THRs are modeling amps, I guess I think of that as 2 different kinds of amps, and don't have anything against either. I use an AMT SS-11 tube preamp and an ISP Stealth SS power amp, so I'm not really biased, there are good tube, SS, and modeling amps, and there are crappy ones. I'm happy with what I'm using now, and don't have any spare toy funds right now. But, if I was looking for an amp, I would check out the THRs based on the sounds in the THR practice amp I played with for a while. I might also check out the Quilters. Depending on how much I wanted to spend, the Mesa Mark V 25 or 35 might be in there too. I do know that I don't play anywhere anymore where a 100W, or even 50W tube amp is practical. Heck, even when I was gigging 20 years ago sound guys always told you to turn your 50W Marshall head down, usually just below the point where it sounded really good...

Oops, rambling again... sorry...

Artie, you can just use the preamp of the Yamahas to the PA, you can run them without a speaker cabinet hooked up since it has a SS power amp (did that get confusing again ;-) , but it's there if you need it, which I kinda like.

Re: Anyone else intrigued by these two new Yamaha SS amps? (THR100H and THR100HD)

I usually like Sweetwater's reviews but I don't think this one is so good. Try this:

I'm going to buy one in the next few days and will keep you informed. I've listened to demos of various Quilters and for Vox crunch/Marshall lead I don't think they are even close to the Yamaha.

Re: Anyone else intrigued by these two new Yamaha SS amps? (THR100H and THR100HD)

Well folks, after a few hiccupsI now have my amp. Been playing and twiddling for a couple of hours and first impressions are that it's AMAZING. My gigging amp for the past 7 years is a Cornford Roadhouse combo which basically produces the tones you wish your Marshall did. So, in an attempt to replicate it, I headed straight for EL34s, class AB with the Lead pre-amp. I can replicate the sound of my Cornford to the point that I don't think I could tell the difference. A few years back I was using a Laney VC50 (great amp) and, by switching to 6L6 I can reproduce that amp as well. I've dabbled with the Clean setting and got some great Fenderish tones. The Crunch setting is awesome and I'm going to be exploring that a lot more. Modern is also great and has tons of gain if you want it.

This is a LOT of amp and I don't consider it be overpriced. What would you pay for a top of the line Boogie, Bogner, Soldano etc ? I've never tried a Kemper or Axe FX but I really like some of the demos I've heard. The Yamaha is in the same league easily but it's a very straightforward guitar amp that's easy to use and make instant adjustments on the fly. The Kemper and Axe FZ are too complicated for me and I'm sure the same goes for a lot of players.

Volume ? There's loads of it. Tube like ? Without a doubt. Niggles ? Only that I wish the cab (I've got the 2 x 12) had side handles because it's a heavy beast.

Re: Anyone else intrigued by these two new Yamaha SS amps? (THR100H and THR100HD)

I have used a Yamaha THR10X a bit and i dont mind them for what they are.

Re: Anyone else intrigued by these two new Yamaha SS amps? (THR100H and THR100HD)

Would be cool to hear a clip of it and the cornhole side by side

Re: Anyone else intrigued by these two new Yamaha SS amps? (THR100H and THR100HD)

Ive been intrigued since they came out. so small so that concerns me as small speakers tend to get farty or distort. but they do seem to offer alot of good tones.

Red Label, having spent most of my riding/racing years on RED or Green machines, I beg to differ on the Yamaha making the best......But, I will be honest and say if I were buying a new bike right now, the new R1 would probably be the one... haha

Re: Anyone else intrigued by these two new Yamaha SS amps? (THR100H and THR100HD)

You're thinking of the THR10s, the THR100s are 100W heads, click the video in the OP.

FTR, the THR10s do sound good for practice. It's not the same idea as driving a 12" speaker with a real amp, it's more of really good amp modeling, including speakers, cabinet, and some "air" coming out of full range boom box speakers. They actually sound great.

FWIW, my MX bike is blue, and you have to premix.
