Anyone Else Love the Fender 57/62 Pickups?

I Know TGWIF recently posted about em...I'm currently working on my 62 MIJ reissue strat and it currently has a Twangbanger in the bridge and SSL2s in the neck and middle..I'm starting to think that maybe I'd also like a more vintage wind and something not really overwound per se..

I have used the Fat 50s and the 54s...Was maybe leaning towards these or even the 69 set? Your alls input...A total set of these can be had for $100 or less..

Re: Anyone Else Love the Fender 57/62 Pickups?

I like 'em. They are good, plain Strat pickups. Nothing "special" about them, but they sound good.

Re: Anyone Else Love the Fender 57/62 Pickups?

They'd be more attractive if you got them for cheaper.

What are the other options in that price range?

Re: Anyone Else Love the Fender 57/62 Pickups?

FWIW, I think two SSL2s and a Twangbanger is a great combo. I don't think 57/62's will make you any more happy than what you already have in the guitar. But if you want to trade for my set of 57/62's, I might be interested. I was thinking of going to SSL2's in that guitar anyhow.

Wasn't wanting to part with the pickups if I pull em,but was thinking about trying the 57/62s....Not sure if the prices are much lower? Haven't seen it happen yet..Before the Twangbanger I had an SSL6 Custom in the bridge...A bit dark but it was a nice beefy pickup...I'm just afraid that the stock 57/62 might just be too thin and toppy? As it should be though..

Re: Anyone Else Love the Fender 57/62 Pickups?

I don't think they will be all that different from the SSL-2's you have, honestly. The stagger vs. flat poles will be the biggest difference IMO. And that is only a slight difference, though it is noticeable. With a plain G, I prefer the flat poles, even with a 7-1/4 radius. With a wound G (which I have on the guitar with the 57/62's), I prefer the stagger.

In other words, the bridge p/u will be the most different if you go to 57/62's. It will sound like a classic Strat bridge instead of like a Tele bridge.

This is a 57 RI Strat that has been heavily modded John. I have the original pickups somewhere. I changed the neck to a R/W birdseye maple neck, nd put locking tuners and a few other mods.. The pickups I elected to go with are the Antiquity Texas Hots. I love them!

Nice Dave...And my favs are the Surfers....Maybe I should just spring for another set and be done with it...It's always the bridge position that I'm most fussy about...I didn't care for the bridge Texas Hot and this is why I normally end up with either a TB or an SSL6 in the bridge...So basically thats where I'm currently at with this axe, minus the middle and neck surfers...

Re: Anyone Else Love the Fender 57/62 Pickups?

The tone of the surfers is very full. If you want some variety then maybe the 57/62's will be a breath of fresh air.

This is one of the nicest utoob vids of them, some Why Worry in all different positions

Re: Anyone Else Love the Fender 57/62 Pickups?

I love 'em...I tried a lot of pickups in my Strat before landing on the 57/62's and they were all good but the 57/62's jut had the most "vintage Strat" sound of any of them.

The Fat 50's are cool too but they have a bit more midrange fattness to them which is what I was getting from the SSL-1's...the CS 69's are really amazing pickups but not at all a late 50's early 60's sound...think Jimi at Woodstock, Blackmore, late 60's big head Strat sound...

The CS 54's are the ones I haven't tried yet but I'm so happy with these 57/62's I don't know if I will bother until I have another Stat that needs pickups!

If you look around used you can pick 'em up dirt cheep too...I'm talking $20 a pop and less!

The CS 54's are a better sounding pickup than the 57/62's are. I have never really heard great tone coming out of those 57/62's.

But then again sound is subjective and everyone hears differently.

Re: Anyone Else Love the Fender 57/62 Pickups?

I'll repeat what I said in the other thread. I love the two I have, but over the years I've tried them stock in some Strats and been underwhelmed. MJ makes PE strat pickups all the time, maybe at some point I can release a PE strat pickup. Until then if you've tried them and like them, buy them or call MJ. TGWIF is right though, you should be able to find them cheap to try.

Is that Plain Enamel?

Re: Anyone Else Love the Fender 57/62 Pickups?

Is that Plain Enamel?

Maybe therein lies the problem. I always thought they were PE. I just pulled mine to verify, and let's just say it's "really dark brown" wire, looks like PE to me, not darkly colored formvar. What color was the wire on yours? Thing is, mine sounds like it has PE. There are tests I can do but I'm no too motivated, it's in a guitar right now. I found some fender descriptions that said "redesigned blah blah formvar wire" so maybe they changed it consciously at some point? I just figured they were inconsistent. Insulation color can vary, but usually a drastic shift suggests a change in material or supplier.

Re: Anyone Else Love the Fender 57/62 Pickups?

Interesting...

Mine have a very dark purple insulation on them.

Also just to disclose all facts mine are older...they were pulled from a very early 62 reissue Strat and are pre beveled magnets...in fact that's the only thing I dislike about them!

I've got to pull the Strat down in a day or two for a full on set up so I'll snap a few pics of the pickups then...
