My gigging pickups: A review of the current lineup

Aceman

I am your doctor of love!
So, for those not aware, I play in an 80's hair metal tribute band. As such, we use a lot of guitar (big hair, big guitars, blah blah blah). For more info - check here (www.hollywoodblvdband.com). We play all your classic hair bands: Poision, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Warrant, Ratt, etc...

All played into a Mesa Stiletto on 50 watts, bold setting, using the tight gain channel (Silicon rectifier for those who care...)

Here is a rundown of my guitar/pickups that I use and my general thoughts:

White Dean Cadillac: PG/Custom - I never use the neck on this guitar. Usually use it for Def Leppard, Quiet Riot, Scorpions, Twisted Sister and some others. Occasionally Motley Crue. The Custom is just an all around winner here. All the scream needed for solos, and decent booty where appropriate. If too much bass (like quiet riot) I adjust by adding some crunch with a tight metallic delay.

Cherry Sunburst Cadillac: PG set (custom 9k PG in bridge). I use this guitar almost always on Poison/Ratt and Sweet Child. Contrary to what people may think, it sounds great in this roll. Again - delay and chorus get used a lot. The PG maybe is a little light in the top for Ratt, but whatever. Still sounds great. On Sweet Child, I roll the tone down to maybe 3/4 on the neck and it just slays!

Silverburst Cadillac: HB103N/JB-8 Bridge - I *might* use this guitar for anything. However, I often use it for Lay It Down in drop D. Very crunchy, cool high end - somewhere between a Distortion/SuperDistortion in my opinion. I use it lot on Scorpions also (arguably a better Scorps guitar than the Custom). I actually like this guitar on any of the heavier stuff like Cinderella, Motley Crue, and a few others. I have not tried the 103 neck yet (just installed)

Kramer Shredstick: Screamin' Demon - I use this on Dokken (duh!) although I play no leads. Also on Poison/Warrant/Van Halen. It is just fantastic on all of those. This is a touch quieter than the Custom or JB (like the PG's) but cranked through amp it doesn't realer matter/show. This is just a fantastic pickup for anything. decidedly a touch more rock than the PG's, and definitely a slightly sportier thing than a stock 59. Could play all sorts of stuff on this. Leads really come through nicely.

Jackson Jenna Jameson King V: HB103 set - So this is basically a 59 and a Distortion. I've been playing it a lot lately. Songs it typically gets used on are Edge of a Broken Heart (Vixen), Looks That Kill (Crue), Heartbreaker (Benetar), Girls Girls Girls (Crue), Hate Myself for Loving You (Jett) and occasional others. I could easily play the whole show with this bridge pickup (except GnR). There are a number of songs where it might be a touch too crunchy, but I could fix that with a quick EQ change on the amp. But this guitar is really all about the Distortion. Just sounds crunchy and mean and screams for leads.

Obviously I am an advocate of both the Custom and Distortion. Honestly, the Custom is the better all around IMO. But I could be super happy with the Distortion as well. Again, one has thump and one has chunck. Both scream.

The PG works amazingly well and while you don't consider it metal per se, through a cranked Mesa, a Seth is metal....I probably like the sound of that guitar best over all.

Never underestimate Duncan Designed if you are on a budget! And the Demon is really growing on me as a great all around pickup too. I could fairly easily do Sweet Child with one of those in the neck as well!

Some other things I also have are a 335 with Jazz/JB (no feedback-squeel!) Another HB103 loaded Jackson Strat, A Custom Custom loaded Dean 350 and some stock Dean guitars and a Tone Zone in an Ibby RGEX4.

* I am currently using a Zoom g3 in the loop for assorted flavors of delay, chorus, flange, and reverb, as well as a Moreley Steve Vai Liberty Wah.

Great demo video...has a taste of the Stones back when they WERE the world's greatest R&R band...Mick Taylor years...

Aceman, that's a sweet setup man! I'm surprised you don't have a 3 pickup les paul in the mix haha

Black 3-Pickup Dean Cadillac with DMT's in it. Played it last night actually. Mincer digs it. Not for sale.

I have on a couple of occasions taken the Gibson/Frehley Budokan out.

I do, indeed! Funny, as it is a guitar I would never consider for myself, but man, it is awesome.

By the way Dave - you said the bridge was twice as loud as the neck pup....that was just a funky solder joint in the switch. All good now!

Nice setup and review of those pickups Ace. I love your site and those pro pics you posted a while back were stupid good. I know the Cadillac is basically a Les Paul, but you really need a proper LP in the mix for some songs. I know you have two and I wouldn't bring them to gig much, if at all either. Just pick up a beat up Classic or Standard or something.... even in black would look sic.

I have a DC 59' bridge that's older than your kids, and it needs to go into something you own.

Have you thought about putting a PATB-3 or even a PATB-1 in any of your guitars? The -1 is a great in between a Distortion and a Custom; more perfect than either in a trem guitar. Just a suggestion.

Thanks for the rundown.

Now, that is almost more fun then any one man should have at any given time! I actually like those HB103's as well. It's the only ceramic neck pickup that I have ever liked, and the bridge is pretty sweet. Not to mention those take mag swaps really well.

I have not forgot about the DC 59...hang on!

And you know, as cool as I believe the PATB's to be, I have just never really had the urge to put any in anything. That said - I have a Shredstick project (or two) going on....

I'm guessing they would be great for about everything we do.

Re: My gigging pickups: A review of the current lineup

The Demon is a killer pickup.

Excellent note separation, not the most fluid lead pickup since it's so percussive and uncompressed but man does it kill for rhythm. Tight, dry and clear.

Got mine in a 1 humbucker, 1 volume Strat and I love it.

Re: My gigging pickups: A review of the current lineup

Good stuff man! Got a pic of the Kramer?
Also are you playing Motley Crue in E440, or are you 1 step down and playing those other songs in D standard (Motley tuning)?
That stuck out to me because I do not have a guitar in D standard (for Motely Crue and others), because I sold that guitar and I want another to fill that role and its gotta be a full floating OFR guitar.
Good stuff you have here and its a nice varied selection too which is really cool.

We play pretty much everything in original pitch. We both have enough guitars to tune to D standard, but I happen ti use the pitch shift in my Zoom G3X and he has a Digitech Drop

Re: My gigging pickups: A review of the current lineup

Nice and nice guitar Sir! Love that color!
I didnt think of the pitch shift, that can be a life saver when it comes to the business youre in, especially with Floyd guitars.

Re: My gigging pickups: A review of the current lineup

I have no idea what the guitar really is - got it used $160 w/ Demon in it.

Re: My gigging pickups: A review of the current lineup

I haven't been this excited since a Paul Gilbert rig rundown. :disappoin

Re: My gigging pickups: A review of the current lineup

It inspired me to put a covered Custom into my PRS SE Bernie. I also ripped out the push pull. I had gone through 8 or so bridge pickups, but I am quite satisfied now. This wasn't his first post that had me considering the Custom either, after reading it, I just couldn't resist any longer. I had been shooting for something more like Bernie's Beast in tone. I am having more fun just playing it now. I am always surprised by what the Custom can do but I usually yank it because of the ceramic treble thing. It works really well with a cover in a warm mahogany, maple top, rosewood board situation, and I don't notice the ceramic treble sass anymore. Thanks Aceman!
