Anyone else roll their tone knob down a little?

I always find myself with all humbuckers to really get that sweet spot is to roll the tone down on the bridge to about 7 or 8. To me the sound of those tapered off highs just makes riffing oh so sweet but I want to do lead, I roll it back up to about full volume. I do this more on my SG but not at all on my Les Paul since the Rio Grande BBQ kind of naturally has tapered off highs.

when going clean on certain guitars.

I like the bridge pickup of my jaguar to be smooth when clean, not sharp, as usual.

Re: Anyone else roll their tone knob down a little?

I often roll down the tone to about 7 or so when I'm playing clean, whether it's with a neck or bridge humbucker. It makes for a nice soft texture that's great for jazzy stuff.

Yep. I almost never use the tone knob(s) on 10. Once in a while I'll bring the tone to 10 and roll off the volume a little to compensate. Everything on 10 is just too harsh to my ears.

I love my guitars bright some thing about it just turns me on

Humbuckers? Not usually. The rest of the time? Yeah, often. I tend to leave the tone knob at around 7 or so on my Tele - especially when using the bridge pickup. It's barely perceptible but it does smooth out the sound a little without making it sound dull.

Re: Anyone else roll their tone knob down a little?

I'm the opposite. I roll off the tone to 6 or 7 for leads. I like a touch of that Holdsworth thing happening with my tone.

Re: Anyone else roll their tone knob down a little?

I usually keep my tone on my bridge pickups rolled back just a tad.

+1.

I do like to have some attack on my leads though, so I'll usually fly between bridge and neck pickups mid solo. I tweak all the knobs when I play too.

I don't dig dull/muddy/inarticulate rhythm work, but when it comes to leads I can dig that Dave Murray/Santana super smooth tone for some licks, and then have that Paul Gilbert kinda super present, percussive pick attack click for some other things.

Re: Anyone else roll their tone knob down a little?

I roll back the tone pretty often with humbuckers and almost always with single coils.

One exception to the rule: I have a basswood Washburn X-series that has an A2 Full Shred Bridge with 6 slotted screws on the treble side, an antiquity texas hot mid, and an antiquity texas hot custom bridge model in the neck. It's a screwy setup that works really well, and is plenty warm without rolling back the tone.

Re: Anyone else roll their tone knob down a little?

I tend to not, but that's largely in part to the fact I play a Les Paul with a Custom in the bridge. When I play a Tele though I roll down the tone knob to get varying degrees of PAF vibe from the sound. That's prob my favorite thing about Teles.

Re: Anyone else roll their tone knob down a little?

I only use it on on my clean sound sometimes (seeing as how only one of my 2 guitars actually has a tone knob anyway).
It would be utterly useless for my usual rhythm playing, because I play modern high gain stuff and it needs clarity

Re: Anyone else roll their tone knob down a little?

I'm always adjusting my volume and tone knobs. Rolling off a bit of treble is called for a lot of the time, especially on Strats and Teles.

Re: Anyone else roll their tone knob down a little?

I almost never have a tone control set on 10 unless I'm playing a Strat...I do crank those back sometimes but I do crank them to full sometimes as well...

Re: Anyone else roll their tone knob down a little?

These days I tend to play mainly humbucker equiped guitars and set my rig up to get my desired sound with the bridge pick set at around 7 - 8 on the volume and 6 on the tone so I have a little in reserve.

Re: Anyone else roll their tone knob down a little?

Depends on what I am trying to do; but I'm not afraid to mess with the tone knobs.
