Anyone else sick of all the relentless pursuit of VH's tone?

Okay, rant time.

Personally I think that instead of trying so goddamn hard to copy a tone from the 70s people should instead try to make something new. Let's face it, you're never going to get the tone exactly like Eddie's no matter how many 1971 quarters you have. The absolute best you'll ever get is *almost* sounding exactly like someone else! It's one thing to try and get something similar to his tone, but all these people struggling to get absolutely impeccably close to it is, at least to me, completely freaking ridiculous. With all that time you're wasting you could be making a new sound. Something that sounds even better! Or hell, you could make something that sounds like you! You know what Eddie did to get that tone? He built a guitar out of really cheap, crappy parts, plopped in an ES-335 humbucker, AND FOUND HIS OWN DAMN SOUND!

I'm very sick of them but evh threads are like car accidents , I gotta slow down and rubber neck , make a few comments. I'm guilty of that , I think I commented in an evh thread today wait a minute this is an evh thread

I am too busy copying warren demartini's old tone to worry about VH's tone!:lmao:

Yup, the guy was a guitar hero, but also a cash cow for a lot of companies. :alcoholic

Don't get your panties in a wad over what other people are doing. The more you get your paties in a wad over what you can't control the less time you have to be creating and relishing your own tone. Let bygones be bygones or :banghead: the choice is yours. IMO

Exactly how does one wade one's panties?

Re: Anyone else sick of all the relentless pursuit of VH's tone?

Well, one has to be wearing panties first.

I think everyone is chasing the wrong tone.

He sounded much better in the 90s IMO.

Is this post referring to incontinence?

All great musicians stood on the shoulders of the giants that preceded them. You can't learn without copying your heroes to a certain extent. Personally I'd much rather hear Eddie-inspired guitarists than Paramore emo horse****.

Re: Anyone else sick of all the relentless pursuit of VH's tone?

Yes but you're forgetting that some play just for the fun of being able to play our favorite songs AND that trying to get the tone heard on the radio/records/tapes/CDs to come out is a middle step to getting the tone in our heads out of our heads and in our ears. It shouldn't be obsessed over as much as it is though.

Re: Anyone else sick of all the relentless pursuit of VH's tone?

How come no one is chasing Eddies tone when he used that steinberger guitar
Christ!!!!!! i hated that

Re: Anyone else sick of all the relentless pursuit of VH's tone?

It can get ridiculous, but I'm not really bothered by other people's musical endeavors. They do what they do; I do what I do.

Re: Anyone else sick of all the relentless pursuit of VH's tone?

Eh, if thats what people want to do. I don't care about his tone, but its interesting.

Re: Anyone else sick of all the relentless pursuit of VH's tone?

I meant wad not wade. LMAO!

I've had the flu for four days.

I just think guys want to cop someone else's tone so it sounds right. Heck most of the posts here in the pickup lounge are guys trying to get this tone or that tone that they heard. So what if it's EVH, Slash, Peter Green, or whoever.

Re: Anyone else sick of all the relentless pursuit of VH's tone?

i am thrilled that people chase his tone scientifically- its versatile and useful for the vocabulary he pushed. i have a much bigger problem with people who are preachy about how you should develop your own style. ive never met any one with their own style preach you should get your own style. kevin shields obsessed with being original, and when he gave up, he came up with a style so outthere, 50 bands backdrafted it before mbv loveless was released. it takes alot of science to sound like a pro while everything you hear and see for sale at gc just pushes you in the direction of sounding like some amateur jackoff iin his bedroom-, god, i hate amateur bedroom tone! most humble evh tonechasers will admit theyve got on the green but not to a tee, and for all i know they need it for their ballad, or their ska band, or maybe they made a living in a successful tribute or coverband. eddies influence is mega because his playing was a bigbang in itself in record slump 70s, his gtr tone was new and exciting, he designed a great LesTeleish guitar, and the 5150 is the first affordable amp that kids got to rival the Marshallopoly. i can say alot of things very fallible about him too, but if youre just improving your tone or trying to get inside his head, lots of dbags halfassed it, thats easy and alltoo common. but if you are gonna compose or cultivate your own style, the key thing you should take away from the Evh legend is the guts he had to pursue his imagination. Coltrane poisoned sax for alot imitators but it still takes discipline to get where he was at first; thats the difference between improv and just noodling in public. Myself, i did a Frnkstrat for my pals bday, in the process i soaked up a wealth of info about mightymite, super70s, echoplex engines,Superleads, pickup angling, windings, potting wax, the jeffbeck trick for keeping whammybars in tune, and just being a Dutch immigrant in Cali.

Bliss... man... that makes my head hurt and i had to read it 3 times and im still not sure i get the whole gist.

But ill tell yah dude when the 5150 came out it was only a little less than the then current JCM900's by 1993 standards it wasnt a budget amp by any means.

The big thing all the EVH tone chasers miss is... They arent Ed. While its a fun exercise in mental masturbation to try to figure out what gear he used its a pretty futile exercise. Ive heard guys with gear only vaugely similar cop a decent VH tone cause they got the chops.
