So my ernie ball john petrucci was in a pretty bad accident involving a bed frame. Since then the finish has been severely cracked and has started flaking off so it is time to get it refinished. Any thoughts on getting a 'spray on truck liner' as my new finish?? I could get the finish redone to match the candy apple red but I think the truck bed liner would be cooler.

Ahh.,...probally wouldnt be great for tone unless they could do it very, very, thin.

Crazy/half interesting idea though. BTW, did you grow up watching macgyver???? LOL!!!!!!!!!

Re: anyone ever line-x a guitar?

hmm... sounds like it would just prevent the wood from Vibrating... sounds like you liked the Ernie Ball Subsonic finishes...

That is a slightly more exspensive axe to basicly wreck with experiments... best thing would be to have a great repair shop that has a full finnish shop in house... There is only one shop like that near me around Toronto.... they custom make some pretty expensive guitars and the type of place you need to make an appointment to see the special vintage room.... www.12fret.com if you have a place like this near you i'd take it to them... chances are the repair may make it like a new axe again!

thanks for the link. if it doesnt change the sound of the instrument much i think i might take the plunge.

YES MACGYVER WAS MY CHILDHOOD, MULLET AND ALL......

edit: the rhino lining seems smooth while the line-x is rough so maybe i should get that mofo rhino lined

I think the Rhino is more rubbery and the line-x is rougher. I went Line-x on my truck, I'd go Rhino on a guitar. ;) You could get some serious road rash from either if you are thrashing about on it. Yikes!

Re: anyone ever line-x a guitar?

wow dude sounds like a really bad accident. now i'm scared of putting my guiatrs under my bed.

Re: anyone ever line-x a guitar?

If you want to then do it. Only concern (aside from finish thickness and the possible morbid temptation to drop it) would be the feeling on the back of the heel and on the forearm cut. Since you can get it sprayed different colors that's an improvement over before when all they had was black.

rented a loft my freshman year of college (keep mattress but use new bed frame). old bed frame was leaned against the wall and guitar was on the stand. frame fell one day, knocking the guitar off the stand + onto the tile floor, causing the finish around the knobs (the part that hit the floor first) to get ruined.

putting the guitar under the bed is safe to do

Re: anyone ever line-x a guitar?

If you get it done, make sure you post some serious pics on here!!!

About crazy finishes, I have a flying V around here I think I am going to paint Primer grey. Seriously. It has had some serious injurys that I have fixed and it would look good if I gave it a finish so, I think Primer grey is going to get the nod.

...you never know, if the line-ex or rhino looks cool, I may go for it.

Macgyver was the shiznit!!!!!!!!

Re: anyone ever line-x a guitar?

primer grey would be cool but that would make me think of that james hetfeild esp crap.....

powder coating it would be cool. i've seen some 'mirror' powder coats before that looked pretty cool.

When an item is powdered coated, it needs to be hooked up to a charge (or is it a ground) so the power sticks and stays on the item. Are you sure you can powder coat a wood guitar body?

Plus, don't you need to bake them or something afterwards?

Re: anyone ever line-x a guitar?

Carvin has some sort of "black textured finish" they can use on the Bolt-on kits. You might look into their process.

thanks for the heads up. this may be alot like the textured finish that ibanez used to use on the JEM (dont remember the model number but it had a black texture finish that was pretty sweet). this could be a better route to go considering carvin does guitars and line-x is truck liners!
