Give the heavycores a chance. I have a feeling you'll like them.

I've actually used the Heavy Core set before - it was the 10-48 set. I liked the set quite a lot, actually. It worked great for standard but the thing that was a deal breaker on that set was that I kept knocking the low E out of tune when I used it in Drop C#. According to their rep at the time, the 10's are really for a good heavy sound in standard and Eb Standard, and that I'd get better results with the 11-50 set, which is what I still have a fresh pack of. Here's hoping!

I'm thinking maybe I use too heavy of a gauge as a general rule, at least on my Fender-scale guitars. Not because I find them hard to play, but the general consensus seems to regard it as kind of high.

I'm not usually one to give a crap what the general consensus is on that kind of thing, but I have tons of respect for our new guitarist (always have) and he's pretty happy with 10s in our tuning.

I mentioned in another thread that my philosophy on strings is about the same as it is on necks - get them as big as you can get them without hampering your comfort or performance. Billy Gibbons uses a 7-ga set, fer chrissakes and his tone is awesome. Eddie's a 9 or 8 ga user and his tone on the new record was pretty happening.

I'm with you... use what you like, play what you like, and don't make it any harder than it has to be.
