Anyone ever tried 0.09's on their acoustic?

Well... i borrowed an old Fender acoustic dreadnaugth guitar from a friend, and managed to break a string the first 15 minutes playing it. So, well, i got one of my "great ideas" :smash: and put d'addario 0.09 strings for electric guitar on it. Then, i plugged into my Marshall (the guitar had a "put in" humbucker in the soundhole), and played rock.

One of the wierdest experiences i've ever had. Feedback from every note, and feedback like hell no matter what i did anyway. Though, it sounded really "wierd" and "cool" when playing leads, like an...eh... thingdoodlemabobbited electric guitar.

Not good on an acoustic. To light. Don't get the top resonating enough to sound good and deep.

For the best tone, you've gotta learn to handle the medium strings with a wound G on an acoustic...just goes with the territory.

Upside is it'll make your hands stronger and you'll be able to bend the daylights out of your light gauge rock n roll strings when you play your electric.

I wouldn't use anything less than an 11-50 set on any acoustic...personally I prefer a 12-54 set!

Same thing here, the bigger the better...

I love playing 11s on my electric semi-hollow...

I use mostly 12s on my acoustics... harder to bend but such a delicious and deep tone...

9's suck no matter what. I do however like the sounds of acoustics played through distorted electric amps (with good feedback control).

I used 11-52's in standard tuning on my electric for over three years, before i went down to 9's last summer. (The reason was to be able to play more "effortlessly", and therefore have more control over bends and such).

And well, i've been playing bass for about 6 years, so i think my finger strength and endurance is "good enough" anyway.

The reason i put those thin strings on the acoustic, was because it was the only pack of strings i got, and also because i thougth it would be a fun experiment

I used to play on .009's for almost 20 years and then stepped up to 0.10's, but do not let someone else tell you what is best. You make that decision on what feels right to you.
From listening to my recordings, I cannot tell the difference between .009's and 0.10's!

I prefer 9-42, 9-46, or 10-46 on electrics depending on the guitar I play, but anything less than 11-52 on an acoustic feels strange to me.

There are times when theres no substitute for big fat strings.

I cannot tell the difference between .009's and 0.10's!

.. although that's largely because the only people who play 9s use so much compression and distortion it doesn't really matter WHAT strings are on the guitar.

You'd soon know about it if a Jazz player tried to get away with 9s.

I found 9s useful when I started playing again after basically having given up 15 years ago; if you haven't played for a long time or you're nursing some kind of injury then they're OK; but most good guitarists should be able to handle 10s without too much difficulty and they're worth the effort. I started back with 9-42 while I tried to get my fingers to move again, then 9-46, 10-46, and I'm about to order a few sets of 11s; now that I've worked through me old chord and scales manuals and done some serious playing, 10s feel like wet pieces of string.

By the way, I once managed to get 11s on an Ibanez RG and it sounded cool!

0.09's on an electric really annoy me, has to be 0.10's or 0.11's
As for acoustic, I'm curious to know how that would work

The one thing sound to some people like "cookie monster" stuff the other things sound to some people like music for a porn movie.... weird :laugh2:

I find 009 too lose in Std tuning...

for me , 9´s are thin (tonally), respond to picking attack in a bad way (note starts off way above pitch then comes down), and for me there also isn´t enough tension to call playing an enjoyable experience. This is on acoustics or electrics for the most part...

With 13´s this is all IMO much improved :headbang:

BTW: I´ve done teh same with my Charvel acoustic.... almost replaced my electrics

0.11's on electric is perfect for standard. On acoustics, 0.12's is good.

I found 011's on my electric extremely stiff. I had to use so much force to actually get a "free" sounding vibrato, that my hands, arms and neck hurt.

But hey, if you never bend, vibrato, or such, you might as well use 14's.
