Anyone ever try a JB in an SG?

My main gigging guitar for many, many years - SG with a JB.

Very cool, sounds great. Nice solo at the end btw. :approve:

Re: Anyone ever try a JB in an SG?

Yes, it's great. I made a youtube demo of a JB in a goth SG. I wont be able to post it for a couple more weeks, but it sounds delicious! The leads are warm & toasty in the mid range, crisp woody chords, very very mean growl etc. Its all win.

Re: Anyone ever try a JB in an SG?

Im sure I did - I normally have spare JBs lying around so try them in every guitar I get. So I'm pretty sure I had one in a Epi G400, but I cant remember how it was I'm afraid.

Re: Anyone ever try a JB in an SG?

Funny I just put JB's in both my SG's and I got some interesting results. I have 2 SG's. An 2009 with a rosewood fretboard and a 2011 with a baked maple board. The maple is obviously brighter and the JB did not respond well. However the '09 is much warmer and the JB sounds great in it. I was using Alt8's in both and I wanted to give the JB's a shot. I'm putting the Alt8 back in the '11 and the JB is staying in my '09. I also should note that I use 250k pots for the JB's as recommended by a lot of members of the form. The reason I like the JB is not that it sounds a bunch better tonally, but when I turn up the MV on my head, it responds differently. Thats what I like about it. It's also grittier and grainier than the Alt8 and that is the type of gain I like to hear. Hope that helps. I'm thinking of getting a Custom 5 for my '11. If anybody has done that I'd like some feedback. Thanks! hope that helps.

Re: Anyone ever try a JB in an SG?

I don't like stock JB's; even with 250K's there's too much 'ice pick' for me. I like it much better with an A2. Haven't tried an UOA5 in it yet, but will one day.

The C5 used to be the top SG recommendation here, until the C8 came along. C5's are bright and midscooped, C8's are warmer with more mids. Both are very good PU's, and there's only a mag swap difference between the two. Whatever your tastes are, there's something in the Custom family you'll like.

So the C8 the C5 with the Alnico 8? I'm not into the super mid rangy guitar tone. Don't get me wrong, I don't like scooped but that barking mid range im not into either.

C8's have a good dose of mids, C5's don't have much. I like them with UOA5's too, as they have more dynamics and response; a warmer high end, but not as much mids and output as an A8. There's also guys here that like C4's, which have a more balanced EQ. And then there's CC's (A2) and Customs (ceramic). Certainly one of these will be just what somebody wants.

Re: Anyone ever try a JB in an SG?

Andrew - are you thinking about putting one in your SG ? I thought you really liked the P90s.

Nah, the P90s are probably my favorite pickup of all time. :approve: I need a guitar for when I go to Poland later in the year... I am thinking about getting a cheap bolt on Epi (it would be hard to travel with a set neck) and getting it set up professionally and putting some nice pickups in it once I get a job again. I saw a local Epi SG Special for $75 a month or so ago. The luthier I use gives me huge discounts because I have talked to 4 guitar players that all go to him. Last time I got the guitar set up and restrung, and had the bridge and nut filed down, it only cost me $40. If I could get that along with a couple duncan pickups, say around 40 each, it still comes in under $200. When I get back I could just sell the pickups and sell the guitar separately or I could mess with it some more and make it a good around the house guitar.

+1, That's why I don't like the C8. I think too many mids can start to sound just as bad as not enough. I had a difficult time dialing out the really pronounced midrange of the C8.

Re: Anyone ever try a JB in an SG?

OK. So this might be blasphamy here, but I took the alnico 5 from my JB and put it in my Alt8 and I it sounds pretty good. It's a little darker but still powerful. Is there a production model Duncan(or any company for that matter) that this is equivalent to?

Re: Anyone ever try a JB in an SG?

Yeah, an Alt5.... I don't think they make a pickup similar to that but it could be a cool pickup...

Re: Anyone ever try a JB in an SG?

I have a gibson sg faded with a bigsby and a '59/JB combo in it. it sounds great with the JB, but the truth is I use the neck pickup way more. not that I don't love the sound of the JB but the '59 in the neck just sounds absolutely sublime. the JB is a great rock n roll pickup though and sounds excellent with the gain cranked up.

Re: Anyone ever try a JB in an SG?

I has one in my SG, I put phat cats in that I liked better.... More versatile for what I was playing. I liked the Jb better than the stock 498 though...

Count me as duly impressed.

If I ever get an SG, I will be looking at a JB.
