Anyone use this Dimarzio pickup or have heard it in use? If so what does it sound like?

The dude from Linkin Park uses one.

Re: Anyone familiar with the Dropsonic?

yeah... for some analysis on its tone look at Linkin Park.. Brad Delson's got it. It sounds like it has pretty good definition and strong bass

Re: Anyone familiar with the Dropsonic?

I have a dropsonic in a guitar with a look you'd never suspect (see pic below hehe) anyway it's in an alder strat strung with Zakk Wylde signature boomers (11,14,18,36,52,70) tuned to C...the low end this thing puts out will shake down my house and if you hit a high pinch harmonic with it, your ears will bleed...i love it...i have another strat setup with and EMG 85 in the bridge and the same strings and tuning and i like the dropsonic better to be honest. I had the drop sonic in the strat with 10-46 strings also tuned to E or D and it still worked great in the alder and made up for the normal thin sound of a strat but this pickup is ment to go low D C B you name it it will scream and be thick! hope that helps a bit. and here is the strat it's in hehehe...

Re: Anyone familiar with the Dropsonic?

Hmmm... maybe I should try a dropsonic in my Ibanez. Right now I got a duncan distortion in there and I like the sound but maybe for S&G's I'll try a drop sonic. I tune that gutiar to C too.

Re: Anyone familiar with the Dropsonic?

I had a drop sonic in my superstrat for a short while....good pickup. The best way I can describe it is that it's very tight like an Evolution....very tight. But it's EQ with less upper end and more bottom end and low mids.

It's kind of like a dark Evolution I guess....that's what I heard at least.

Re: Anyone familiar with the Dropsonic?

how much bigger is the hole in your tuning peg for that 70?? :D

Re: Anyone familiar with the Dropsonic?

I think the drop sonic is really just dimarzio's version of the Invader. I think the Invader doesn't get the credit it deserves. I have an Invader in my Gibson Explorer- tuned down to C and I have the craziest lowend sound around here.

Re: Anyone familiar with the Dropsonic?

Nate...well i had a set of fender schaller locking tuners on there at first and when i went to the 70 there was no chance of it fitting lol...so i went back to the stock MIM tuners and it fit perfect, didn't have to mod a thing thank god...just had to file the nut a bit to get it to be smooth and not snag the HUGE sting hehe. now that i have been playing with that 70 set for a while...on two strats actually both in C or B when i pick up one of my other guitars with 10-46 in E it feels like a tiny little toy lol.

They're absolutely dissimilar, both in form & function.

The Invader is wound waaaay hotter, as well.

From Dimarzio's website--

"Introducing our first heavy humbucker of the 21st century. The DiMarzio® D Sonic™ is a high-output bridge humbucker designed for the extended low end and heavy chords that dropped tuning delivers, plus serious treble response for single-note solos and standard tuning. "

Sounds a lot like what the Invader is supposed to do (and does). plus listen to the linkin park clip on the dimarzio site. That guitar part sounds pretty close to the sound i get from my Invader.

Re: Anyone familiar with the Dropsonic?

can anyone give me a sort of rating as far as lows mids and highs of the dsonic? my ISP wont let me look at the tone chart on the dimarzio site.

On DiMarzio's site it was:
Low - 6
Mid - 6
High - 5

Thats their rating of the tone.

Probably normal. Most modern pegs (and more importantly Floyd Rose nuts) can thread a 70, but an 80 like I use on baritones requires modification to one or both, usually both ;)

It's not just for drop tunings....it sounded suprising well in standard tuning.

yeah it's in E in the Paul.

Re: Anyone familiar with the Dropsonic?

Not to resurrect this thread, but has anyone seen the new issue of Guitar One? The guy from Saliva has the Drop Sonic in his les paul (like 3 Cent mentioned), but he has it reversed. Apparently, when reversed (according to the DiMarzio site), it is a touch louder and more suited for standard tunings.

I gotta find someone selling a Drop Sonic to pop in my Ibanez to give it a shot!
