i have never used it on a guitar but i have used it for other applications. it will seal the wood just fine, more similar to poly than nitro i think. it will also stay crystal clear forever, i mean forever, it will never take on a yellowish vintage tinge. i personally dont think you need to do any serious sanding between coats....just a decent sand after you've sprayed the final coat. i usually do some light "kiss" sanding between every coat
