Anyone got Pro Tools?

I just got the MBOX for Pro Tools which includes the LE software. It should be at my house in a few days and I was wondrering if I'll need extra plug-ins. What are some necessary ones? I'm going to be recording my songs, track by track. I play guitar and bass. What about a drum machine or drum software? Will I need that?

Re: Anyone got Pro Tools?

I have spent the last 2 days installing ProTools into my computer, then wiring it into my studio and now reading manuals. It's pretty simple to get it up and running but there is alot to learn and I can see that I'll be switching off between recording and reading for quite awhile.

I looked over the MBOX specs and whatnot on the DigiDesign site and it appears that you will be receiving the same software bundles that I received. You'll have more than enough stuff to get started and there are all sorts of drum samples, loops, synth patches and everything else you might want or need. It'll just take you awhile to figure it all out.

I had it loaded and running in maybe and hour or so and I was recording shortly there after so getting basic results (with killer tone) is pretty easy. If you want to use the sequencer and drum loops that will take some extra reading, but the stuff does sound killer.

Save up a couple of bucks and get an inexpensive keyboard (piano looking type) that can act as a midi controller and you'll have virtual synths as well.

I'm running currently on a PC with XP, a P4 1.6 gig processor and 516k ram and so far I haven't run into any processor based issues. Next on my list is a dual processor Mac and the Control|8 surface.

I'm two days in so I may not be super-helpful in the support area, but I'm learning. Good luck and have fun with it. The ProTools stuff is absolutely killer.

Re: Anyone got Pro Tools?

I record at a studio that is billed as the leading ProTools studio in New England. I don't run the system myself, but having sat next to some great engineers for hundreds of hours has shown me that the EQ, compression, & reverb plugins are the most commonly used. At least to my eyes.
I occasionaly have them use a pitch tuner plug-in on my voice if somethings out of tune a little. But usually only if I'm "real, real" attached to a certain phrase because of it's character. If not I just use another take or sing it again.

Re: Anyone got Pro Tools?

If you got the factory bundle with Reason Adapted in it, you have loops, samplers, sequencers and drum stuff there already.

Re: Anyone got Pro Tools?

I got the MBOX and it came with 3 extra disks: Reason Adapted, Live, and Amplitude/Sampletank/T-Racks. I tried messing with these but I thought they were just demos and I couldn't figure out how to get the drums from Reason Adapted over to the Pro Tools recording screen. I'm not sure if I can or if I have to buy a separate one. :smack:

Re: Anyone got Pro Tools?

You can, and they are not demo models, They will open up completely when you register them. There is a ton of stuff on those disks and the drums, samplers and sequencers on those disks sound far better than anything else you are liable to find unless you pay really big bucks for some of the other plug-ins.

I was just sitting down to start reading the manual on the reas adapt disk when I caught your post. Again, I only have 2 days lead time on you with this stuff but I do have access to a couple of engineers who are badass with all this software, and more. As I learn how to fire this stuff all up and bring it into Protools I'll be glad to share any info I get. If you have AIM or Yahoo, we may get more accomplished than by chasing threads on this site.

You might also look over the mix window on the demo song, there are loops and possibly other stuff that you can pick up by looking over that song. Email me at Robert@failedgrace.com and we'll see about hooking up on AIM or Yahoo messenger. We can probably help each other out.

Re: Anyone got Pro Tools?

OK, I figured out how to get drums from Reason Adapted into ProTools if you are intersted. You use the Reason Adapted plug-in and you run the ReDrums through the sequencer with midi enabled. You may have to do a little patching on the back of the RA rack, but it's really not that hard.

Re: Anyone got Pro Tools?

I like the Renaissance Plug-ins myself, i haven't gotten them yet though, i was hoping to find a way to get em free. Other than that T-Racks is a pretty easy and good tool for mastering, or atleast i think so, but it sure does take a lot of CPU.

Re: Anyone got Pro Tools?

Not a plugin but I highly recommend the Korg Nano controller line. They are totally worth the money and uber useful.

They little keyboard you can get for about $40 these days and while its not ideal for playing Chopin, for inputing some synth lines etc its great. Very nice velocity sensativity as well.

Their little nano control is also really handy for mix downs, 8 faders, 16 buttons and 8 knobs.

Its not the end of all interfaces by any means but again, its $60 and for basic stuff its really handy.

I've actually got some far better interfaces but those little guys are always hooked up and sitting on my desktop and see a ton of use.

Wow, talk about Necro-bumps...2004? :D

Coincidentally, I just got around to doing the upgrade from Pro Tools LE 7 to 8 last night...so far so good.
